2 fishermen rescued after fishing boat capsizes near Kodiak
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – Two crewmembers of a Kodiak-based fishing boat are in stable condition after being rescued from the sinking vessel Wednesday, according to U.S. Coast Guard officials.
The Coast Guard said the fishing vessel Tanusha began “taking on water” about 23 miles southeast of the city of Kodiak and put out a distress signal from the boat’s radio beacon at 9:48 a.m. Wednesday, triggering the response.
The two Tanusha crewmembers were the only people onboard the ailing vessel at the time. Coast Guard officials said all nearby fishing boats were alerted of the distress call via radio and one boat — the Victory — went to the area and found the two men in a life raft near the capsized boat.
The Coast Guard said one of the two fishermen was showing signs of hypothermia and suffered a head injury.
Video captured by the Coast Guard depicts a USCG helicopter hoisting one of the crewmembers up from an Alaska State Troopers vessel.
The Coast Guard said the two fishermen were helped by medical personnel in Kodiak and were last reported in “stable” condition.
The Tanusha is a longliner fishing boat built out of Kodiak, according to the Craftsmen United boatbuilders. It suffered a minor oil spill in February 2009 that was naturally dispersed.
