Ch’ang-O is a beautiful and gentle Chinese moon goddess who lives on the moon and is known as ‘Woman of the Moon’. According to Chinese mythology, while living in the palace of heaven Ch’ang-O and her handsome husband Hou Yi displeased the Jade Emperor who then banished the couple to earth to live as mortals.

Hou Yi could see that his beautiful wife was miserable in their new life on earth so he went on a quest to discover the pill of immortality, which would make then both immortal once more. Hou Yi located the pill and returned home with it secured in a special case, which he told Ch’ang-O not to touch. Becoming curious Ch’ang-O opened the case and took the whole pill, which was far too much medicine for one person. Ch’ang-O then floated up, up, up into the sky away from her true love Hou Yi. She landed on the moon.
