NEW YORK (TNND) — A 40-year-old woman was shot in the stomach while a suspect used her as a human shield during a shooting in New York, according to authorities.
The New York Police Department said the woman’s 12-year-old daughter, as well as four other people, were also hurt in the “brazen and heartless attack.”
Interim Chief of Patrol John Chell said surveillance video shows gunfire erupting outside a convenience store in The Bronx Monday night shortly before 5 p.m.
A bullet hit the woman in the belly, said Chell. He added that her daughter was shot in the leg, while four men, who ranged in age from 18 to 21, were shot in their arms and legs.
“If you can imagine, (the) mom and daughter are up against the counter and the two intended targets come in and bump into them, and then turn the mother around as they’re being shot at,” he said, adding that police believe people who were gathered in front of the store — and then ran into the store when shots were fired — were the intended targets.
Chell said police are searching for two suspects in connection to the shooting. He described them both as Black men. While one was seen wearing a black Nike sweatsuit, the other was wearing a grey hoodie.
“At this time, we do not have a motive for this shooting,” Chell said.
He urged anyone who witnessed the shooting contact police at 1-800-577-TIPS.
