Africa trip inspires to protect Black history in America

LUANDA, Angola ‒ The Rev. Shavon Arline-Bradley left Angola earlier this month more inspired than ever to preserve African American history.

The visit, she said, standing near this African city’s National Slavery Museum, “makes me committed to putting my feet 10 toes down into Black History.”

Arline-Bradley, president of the National Council of Negro Women, joined a VIP delegation with President Joe Biden on a trip to Angola where centuries ago, Africans from the region were enslaved and brought to what would become the United States.

“Coming here was bigger than just (being part of) a delegation,” she said. “It was a reigniting of my fire and my angst of being a Black mother in America with my Black son asking questions about himself, not understanding the history except when I teach it.”

My recent trip to Africa has ignited a new passion within me to protect and preserve Black history in America. The rich culture and heritage I witnessed on my journey through various African countries served as a powerful reminder of the importance of honoring and celebrating the contributions and struggles of Black people.

As I walked through the historic sites and heard stories of resilience and triumph, I couldn’t help but draw parallels to the Black history in America. From the legacy of slavery to the Civil Rights Movement, Black Americans have faced countless challenges and overcome immense obstacles to fight for their rights and equality.

It is crucial that we continue to educate ourselves and future generations about the struggles and achievements of Black people in America. By preserving and promoting Black history, we not only honor the sacrifices of those who came before us but also inspire others to stand up for justice and equality.

I am committed to doing my part in protecting and advocating for Black history in America. Whether through supporting local museums and historical sites, sharing stories and experiences, or engaging in conversations about race and inequality, I will strive to ensure that the legacy of Black Americans is not forgotten or erased.

Let us all be inspired by the strength and resilience of our ancestors, both in Africa and America, and work together to create a future where Black history is celebrated and respected. #BlackHistoryMatters #ProtectOurLegacy #AfricanInspiration
