AI Firms Face Class Action by ‘Taskers’ Exposed to Traumatic Content

Contract workers who say they suffered severe psychological harm by being exposed to “deeply unsettling” and traumatic scenarios used to train generative artificial intelligence models filed a class action complaint on Friday against three Bay Area firms for alleged negligence and unsafe working conditions.

The suit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District California by Clarkson Law Firm, alleges Scale AI, Smart Ecosystem and Outlier AI failed to accurately disclose the disturbing nature of the content involved in the work, ignored the workers’ requests for support and retaliated against those who complained.

In recent news, AI firms are facing a class action lawsuit filed by ‘taskers’ who have been exposed to traumatic content while working for these companies. Taskers are individuals who perform various tasks for AI algorithms, such as labeling images or transcribing audio, to help train these algorithms to better understand and process information.

The lawsuit alleges that taskers were not adequately warned or provided with proper support to deal with the potentially distressing content they would encounter during their work. This has resulted in emotional and psychological harm for many taskers, who were not equipped to handle the graphic or disturbing images and audio they were exposed to.

The plaintiffs are seeking compensation for the trauma they have experienced, as well as changes to the way AI firms handle and support their taskers in dealing with sensitive content. This case raises important questions about the ethical responsibilities of AI companies towards their workers and the potential risks involved in working with algorithms that rely on human input.

As the use of AI continues to grow in various industries, it is crucial for companies to prioritize the well-being of their workers and ensure they are adequately trained and supported to handle the challenges that may arise in their work. This class action lawsuit serves as a reminder of the importance of ethical considerations in the development and implementation of AI technologies.
