The Power is in the Prompts
Thirsty? The question “How much water should I drink?” helps us realize the power of prompting
Follow-ups
Perplexity.AI has this awesome feature called follow-ups. It’s like having a conversation with your smartest friend. You write a prompt, get an answer and then you can keep digging deeper. Let me break it down for you:
Ask your first question.
Read the answer Perplexity gives you.
See that “Ask follow-up” button? Click it!
Write a follow-up question (related to the first one). Keep going until you’re satisfied with the info.
How much water?
Here’s my first prompting example: “How much water should a 50-year-old man drink each day?” Perplexity answers with: “For a 50-year-old man, the general recommendation for daily water intake is about 15.5 cups, which is equivalent to approximately 3.7 liters or 125 ounces of fluids per day. This guideline includes all fluids consumed, not just plain water. About 20% of this fluid intake typically comes from food, with the remaining 80% from beverages. However…”
Get more specific answers, with follow-up prompts
Let’s follow-up this answer. I can add more info to create a more valuable answer. In the same thread, the prompt box presents, “Ask follow-up.” OK. Let’s do that. I type: “and the man works outside and the high temperature this week will exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit.” Perplexity answers with: “When working outside in high temperatures, such as those exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit, it is crucial to increase water intake to prevent dehydration and heat-related illnesses. For a 50-year-old man working in such conditions, the following hydration guidelines are recommended…”

Teachers Care About Correct Grammar and Capitalization, But Perplexity.AI Does Not
Perplexity.AI overlooks poor spelling, grammar and capitalization
You may never stop using follow-ups. However, I think you’ll find that as you get more comfortable with AI, your initial prompts become more thorough. You can combine prompts to achieve a quicker and more thorough answer. Our “How much water” cumulative prompt would read, “How much water should a 50-year-old man drink each day and the man works outside and the high temperature this week will exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit and what recommendations do you have for appropriate clothing and respond at a 6th grade reading level.”
Spelling counts. However, AI does not care about correct punctuation, repeated usage of “and,” or run-on sentences. (On the flip side, if my high school English teachers ever read the cumulative prompt (above) on a paper I submitted, they would have pushed me off the roof while yelling, “We thought he was paying attention!”)

Your Homework
Use AI to do your homework on the Golden Gate Bridge
Life is not a spectator sport. That’s why I am assigning you homework. The Golden Gate Bridge may be one of the world’s most photographed pieces of art. Having ridden my bike across the Golden Gate Bridge, I would say the pictures do not do it justice. Regardless, I am adding a picture here. You should visit and experience the Golden Gate Bridge for yourself. (It is very cool!) Here is your homework, architecture fans:
“Write 500-1,000 words on the Golden Gate Bridge. Tell me where it is, which two counties it connects, who built it, when it was built, how tall it is, how long it is, how many cars travel on it every day and how I would get to it from Salt Lake City, by car.”
Use what you’ve already learned to follow-up prompts and get even more vibrant information.
