TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WBRC) – ‘Tis the season, and we’re not just talking about Christmas! It’s also chilly, and on some days and nights downright cold! We’re On Your Side asking folks at Alabama Power about ways to keep your home warm without busting your budget.
The goal is to save money and be comfortable at the same time. Danielle Kimbrough of Alabama Power says that is very possible when you keep this number in mind – 68 on the thermostat.
“One of our biggest tips is look at that thermostat. We suggest it stays on 68 during this time of year. That’s going to save you a good bit of money,” said Alabama Power spokeswoman Danielle Kimbrough.
And there’s more. Kimbrough also recommends running your dish washer, washing machine, and dryer at night, but not necessarily at the same time.
“Those things are much better when you run them at night and not at peak times during the day. So, when we say peak times of the day, that’s when energy is used the most, and whatever that might be for the customer. It might be when everybody is home during the day, so that might be the peak time,” said Kimbrough.
68 may not be the ideal setting for you. Kimbrough says everybody’s different and no two homes are alike in terms of insulation and structure. The key is to find out what works for you.
“Everybody’s comfort level is different and we try to tell our customers keep it where you’re comfortable,” said Kimbrough.
Chilly days, cold nights, but you have the power to keep it comfy inside.
Alabama Power serves around 1.5 million customers.

With the colder months approaching, Alabama Power is here to help you save money on your energy bills this winter. Here are some tips and tricks to keep your home cozy and your wallet happy:
1. Seal any drafts: Check for drafts around windows and doors, and use weather stripping or caulk to seal them up. This will prevent cold air from seeping in and warm air from escaping.
2. Use a programmable thermostat: Set your thermostat to lower temperatures when you’re not home or while you’re sleeping. This can save you money on heating costs without sacrificing comfort.
3. Insulate your home: Proper insulation in your walls, floors, and attic can help retain heat and reduce energy loss. Consider adding insulation or upgrading your current insulation to improve energy efficiency.
4. Dress warmly: Instead of cranking up the heat, try layering up with warm clothing and blankets. This can help you stay comfortable without relying solely on your heating system.
5. Use ceiling fans: Reverse the direction of your ceiling fans to push warm air downward. This can help distribute heat more evenly throughout your home and reduce the workload on your heating system.
By following these tips from Alabama Power, you can stay warm and cozy while saving money on your energy bills this winter. Stay tuned for more energy-saving tips and resources to help you make the most of the season.
