Another ex-Yankees pitcher is headed to San Diego Padres

Another former Yankees pitcher is headed to San Diego.

On Friday, just two days after being designated for assignment by the White Sox, the Padres acquired Toms River, N.J. native Ron Marinaccio for cash, according to the team’s transaction log. Chicago had let him go to make room for left-hander Martín Pérez, whose 1-year, $5 million deal was officially announced this week.

In San Diego, Marinaccio will be surrounded by familiar faces. Pitchers like Michael King, Wandy Peralta, Randy Vásquez, Jhony Brito, and utility man Tyler Wade are all former Yankees players to wind up with the Padres over the last few seasons. Catcher Kyle Higashioka was recently there too, but he signed a two-year, $13.5 million deal with the Texas Rangers in December.

Marinaccio struggled last season, where he was relegated to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre for much of the campaign. He only made 16 big league appearances, posting a 3.86 ERA with 25 strikeouts over 23 1/3 innings.

The 29-year-old right-hander did excel in Triple-A Scranton, where he had a 2.04 ERA across 35 outings with 41 strikeouts last season.

The Yankees DFA’d Marinaccio last September in a corresponding move to make space for right-hander Cody Poteet. Poteet was later the centerpiece in the Yankees-Cubs trade for Cody Bellinger.

The White Sox claimed Marinaccio off waivers soon after, optioning him to Double-A Birmingham.

Yankees fan growing up, Marinaccio was drafted by the Yankees in the 19th round in 2017. Since then, he’s made three separate stops in the Bronx where he posted a career 3.22 ERA in 101 appearances with 137 strikeouts over 114 2/3 innings.

Marinaccio flashed his potential in pinstripes after making his debut in 2022, posting a 2.05 ERA over 40 appearances out of the bullpen.

Exciting news for San Diego Padres fans as another former New York Yankees pitcher is joining the team! With the recent addition of James Paxton, the Padres are continuing to bolster their pitching rotation with the acquisition of another talented arm.

Stay tuned for updates on this new signing and how it will impact the Padres’ quest for a World Series title in the upcoming season. Let’s go Padres! #SanDiegoPadres #MLB #PitchingPowerhouse
