Art Bernstein dead at 95, co-founded Seattle’s Harvard Exit theater

In 1968, the property was sold and turned into the two-screen Harvard Exit cinema beloved by the Seattle community for decades. Bernstein opened the theater with his fellow Boeing engineer Jim O’Steen, according to Cinema Treasures.

The property recently sold again in 2015 for renovation and reopened in 2018.

Today, the building’s main tenant is the Consulate of Mexico, according to the Harvard Exit website.

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Art Bernstein, co-founder of Seattle’s iconic Harvard Exit theater. Bernstein passed away at the age of 95, leaving behind a legacy of creativity and passion for the arts.

Bernstein, along with his business partner Jim O’Halloran, opened the Harvard Exit theater in 1968. The theater quickly became a beloved cultural institution in Seattle, known for showcasing independent and foreign films, as well as hosting special events and film festivals.

Throughout his life, Bernstein was a champion of the arts and a dedicated supporter of local filmmakers and artists. His vision and dedication to creating a space for diverse voices and stories to be heard will be sorely missed.

Our thoughts are with Bernstein’s family, friends, and the entire Seattle arts community as we mourn the loss of a true legend. Rest in peace, Art Bernstein. Your legacy will live on through the Harvard Exit theater and all those whose lives you touched.
