How has your background helped you to write this book?
Tony: I started in civil engineering ironically with a lot of software experience—from the architectural industry. This dual background helped me see how both industries work together, learn many different programs, and understand how software operates. I was able to translate my software knowledge into the Civil Engineering field and immediately dived into Civil 3D to find out what it was capable of and how it could transform existing workflows.
Stephen: I’ve spent 21 years in the AEC industry, progressing from a Civil Drafter/Designer to Corporate Digital Design Lead, developing a deep understanding of design and project management. My background in Architectural Drafting and CAD, along with exposure to disciplines like architectural, structural, electrical, civil, and environmental engineering, has shaped my approach to design and collaboration.
Writing this book is part of my goal to share my knowledge and elevate others in our field through books, networking, and training content.
What parts of the book are your favourites, and why?
Tony: I am partial to the utility modeling sections as they reflect my background as a civil engineering project engineer sizing and strategizing municipal projects. I’m a big fan of modeling utilities in 3D as it is the portion of a project that you physically get to see maybe once before it is buried for some time. Civil 3D enables you to simulate and revisit designs in a way never before possible.
Stephen: Among my favorite parts are the chapters on Information Management with Property Sets and Automating Routine Workflows with Dynamo and Scripting. Automation is my focus at the moment along with BIM|CIM Data Management and Analysis. With the rise of AI and ML, every company in AEC is either trying to or already has developed a BIM data strategy that requires automation at varying degrees. Dynamo for Revit and Civil 3D have allowed CAD Professionals to develop innovative ways to leverage BIM|CIM Data to improve workflows and drive consistency across design teams and organizations.
In what ways have you been active in the Civil 3D community?
Tony: As a Civil 3D community member, I’ve authored several certification exams, helping grow the software’s knowledge base. This has allowed me to network with other civil engineering technology fans, including my co-author, Steve, and led to us writing a modern book on dynamic 3D civil engineering software.
Stephen: I’ve been active on various Civil 3D forums, either asking questions or responding to those that I have solutions for. I’ve presented, co-presented, and assisted in hands-on labs at Autodesk University, covering a multitude of workflows and topics related to Civil 3D. In addition to co-authoring Autodesk Civil 3D 2024 From Start to Finish and now Autodesk Civil 3D 2025 Unleashed, I’ve written articles in AUGIWORLD Magazine spanning topics like Civil 3D, InfraWorks, and BIM|CIM Data Management. I’ve been an active participant in Autodesk’s Civil Infrastructure Futures where users have the ability to test new tools and features and influence the future releases of Civil 3D.
Can you highlight some of the unique features or techniques covered in your book that differentiate it from other resources on Civil3D book?
Tony: This book is unique because Steve and I draw on our experience with previous editions of Civil 3D textbooks, but our goal here was to start right away with real-world methods and workflows for working with a team and utilizing an actual project site for readers to start directly as they would when they join a civil engineering firm.
Stephen: Unlike most Civil 3D books on the market, Autodesk Civil 3D 2025 Unleashed is meant to reach a unique audience. For those already familiar with Civil 3D, this book provides industry and product insight that will elevate your careers in Civil 3D design and collaboration. It will set the foundation for learning capabilities and workflows covering all of the advanced tools and extensions available to Civil 3D users, giving them a leg up in the industry and helping them stand out amongst their peers and colleagues.
