Brush fire kicks up near McGrath State Beach in Oxnard
Crews battled a small brush fire in Oxnard near McGrath State Beach Monday afternoon.
The blaze, called the Harbor Fire, was first reported around 12:40 p.m. at the intersection of North Harbor Boulevard and West Gonzales Road, according to initial reports.
The fire took off as Santa Ana winds swept through Ventura and Los Angeles counties. The worst of the winds were expected to subside by Tuesday afternoon.
Andrew Dowd, a spokesperson for Ventura County Fire, said at 1:30 p.m. crews had built a wet line around the fire, which was measured at about a quarter acre. The size of the fire wasn’t expected to grow because it was bounded by ocean on one side and the firefighters’ boundary on the others.
No structures were threatened, and no evacuations were issued. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, Dowd said.
Crews stayed for about two hours and 30 minutes, wrapping up their work by about 3:15 p.m.
The coastal campground at McGrath has largely been closed for more than a decade, with a few exceptions, because of chronic flooding. The California State Parks website says the latest closure began in July 2019 and was caused by flooding.
