Los Angeles Chargers star linebacker Khalil Mack has reportedly decided to continue playing in the NFL in 2025 after sparking discussion that he would retire following the team’s playoff loss to the Houston Texans.

Per NFL Insider Adam Schefter, “Nine-time Pro-Bowl LB Khalil Mack, who said after the Chargers’ postseason loss to the Texans that he needed to take some time to mull his future, will indeed play in the 2025 season, per source. Mack’s contract is up and he is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent.”

Following the Chargers’ 32-12 wild-card loss, Mack had expressed uncertainty about whether he would continue his career. With his contract up and free agency looming, he had been considering retirement, citing the need to spend more time with his family and reflect on his next steps.

However, Schefter has reported that Mack will indeed return for the 2025 season, putting to rest any doubts about his football future.

Despite the Chargers’ disappointing end to the season and Mack’s struggles in the postseason—his fifth playoff loss in as many appearances—he is set to continue playing, making it clear that he’s not yet ready to walk away from the game.

“It’s hard to say what’s next,” Mack said after the Texans’ loss. “I’ve got a lot of things on my mind right now, and I need to talk through them with my family. But I’m not rushing to make any decisions immediately after a tough loss. I want to spend time with my wife, my kids, and figure things out carefully before making a call.”

At 33, Mack’s career has been marked by individual brilliance, including 39 tackles, six sacks, and nine passes defensed during the regular season.

He also added two sacks in the playoff loss, maintaining his status as one of the most fearsome edge rushers in the NFL.

Yet despite his stellar individual play, Mack has been unable to achieve team success in the postseason, with his Chargers failing to make a deep playoff run. That sense of unfinished business, combined with his desire to make a strong family-first decision, has kept him in limbo about returning for a 12th season.

His contract with the Chargers is up, and he is set to become an unrestricted free agent. While his future in Los Angeles is uncertain, the Chargers would love to retain the veteran linebacker.

General Manager Joe Hortiz has expressed a desire to bring Mack back, highlighting the leadership and competitive spirit he brings to the team.

“Khalil has been at the forefront of what’s made us successful,” Hortiz said. “He’s not only an exceptional player but a leader in our locker room. We hope to keep him here, and we’d be thrilled to have him continue contributing to our defense.”

While the Chargers are hopeful Mack will return, other teams could also be in play.

The Detroit Lions, who are coming off a disappointing season but boast around $57 million in cap space, are reportedly eyeing Mack as a potential free-agent target.

The Lions are eager to boost their pass rush and could view Mack as the ideal veteran presence to complement young talents like Aidan Hutchinson and Alim McNeill. With Detroit’s defensive front needing more firepower, Mack could provide the experience and edge they are looking for.
