Chiefs Staffer’s Pursuit of Different Job Just Got More Serious

The Chiefs drew one step closer to losing a key front office member on Monday, as the Tennessee Titans reportedly agreed to move assistant general manager Mike Borgonzi onto the second round of their interviews for their vacant general manager position.

Borgonzi is in his 16th year with Kansas City, serving as a valuable voice for Brett Veach and his staff. He’s been with the organization in a variety of roles since 2009, beginning as an administrator of scouting before moving his way up.

It’s entirely possible that the Chiefs lose multiple valued members of the team’s brass this offseason, yet Borgonzi would represent a significant loss who can’t be easily replaced.

It’s generally expected that Kansas City will lose some valuable pieces of the staff. This is a team approaching a potentially historic three-peat, widely considered to be the NFL’s best-run franchise. Most decision-makers in the league make mistakes, but even the blindest of owners can see that the Chiefs are the golden standard to hold yourself to.

From that standpoint, Borgonzi should remain a highly-coveted candidate moving forward. He’s been the assistant general manager since 2021 under Brett Veach, right around the time that Kansas City became the league’s clear best team.

It’s been surprising to this point that, outside of Brandt Tillis, no important member of the front office has been poached. The same truth extends to the coaching staff, which has shockingly held itself together despite all of the success.

Copying the Chiefs’ success seems like a wise idea. These decision-makers have been in the building for years and there’s an obvious benefit to that continuity, though it’s surprising that other organizations haven’t tried to mimic them sooner.

Borgonzi is a valued member of the franchise. If he’s rewarded with his opportunity, he’ll deserve it. Nonetheless, it’d be heartbreaking to see him go.
