Sherrone Moore and Michigan have made another addition to their defense through the transfer portal, as Clemson defensive tackle Tre Williams has committed to the Wolverines.
It was announced on New Year’s Day that Williams was entering the transfer portal after being at Clemson his entire career. During that time, Williams has battled some injuries and has mostly been a rotational piece along the defensive front.
However, Williams is coming off the most productive season of his career, registering 14 tackles (including three for a loss), two sacks, two fumble recoveries and two pass deflections in 14 games.
Williams also graded out pretty nicely by Pro Football Focus, earning a 66.3 overall defensive grade, a 69.4 tackling grade and a 68.9 pass rush grade this past year. He was only credited with one missed tackle and one penalty all season, proving he is a very disciplined player along the line.
Williams originally played high school ball at St. Johns in Washington D.C. He was ranked as a four-star recruit and the No. 94 overall prospect in the 2020 recruiting cycle by the 247Sports composite.
Listed at 6-foot-2 and 315 pounds on Clemson’s website, Williams is a big (literally) addition to Michigan’s defense. The Wolverines lost Mason Graham and Kenneth Grant to the NFL this offseason, so it’s been paramount for Michigan to reload up front.
Williams will be joining former Damon Payne Jr. (Alabama) via the portal to help shore up the depth Michigan will have on the defensive line.
The additions of Payne and Williams, as well as guys like Derrick Moore and T.J. Guy — and potentially Rayshaun Benny as well — provide the Wolverines more to work with than fans might have originally expected, giving the Michigan a chance to once again have one of the best defensive lines in the Big Ten. We’ll have to wait and see what the finished product looks like, but the Wolverines are in a better place than they were when the portal initially opened.
Clemson transfer defensive lineman Tre Williams has announced his commitment to the University of Michigan. The 6’2, 300-pound Williams entered the transfer portal earlier this month and wasted no time in finding his new home in Ann Arbor.
Williams, a former 4-star recruit out of St. Louis, Missouri, played in 15 games for the Tigers over the past two seasons. He brings size, strength, and experience to a Michigan defensive line that is looking to reload for the upcoming season.
With his decision to join the Wolverines, Williams adds even more depth and talent to an already formidable defensive unit. Michigan fans can look forward to seeing him wreak havoc in the trenches and help anchor the defense for the 2022 season. Welcome to the Maize and Blue, Tre Williams! #GoBlue .
