There’s a horror film that’s currently streaming, and it stars Cobra Kai’s Peyton List and Bob Gunton. The Inheritance has become a big hit on Hulu, recently hitting #4 on the charts right before Christmas 2024. It had a rough journey, including seeing Netflix put the completed film in turnaround back in January 2023 before it got picked up for distribution. But with dismal audience and critical ratings, will it continue to soar or crash back down to earth?
The movie originally premiered in a limited theatrical run and across different streaming platforms back on July 12, 2024. It was directed by Alejandro Brugués (Juan of the Dead and Satanic Hispanics) and written by Joe Russo and Chris LaMont. Following the film’s completion, Netflix gave it the ax, along with another film called House/Wife, but fortunately it was picked up by Vertical Entertainment for distribution.
The Inheritance is about a billionaire named Charles Abernathy (played by Gunton), who invites his estranged children to his creepy mansion right before he celebrates his 75th birthday, over fears that someone, or something, may be trying to kill him. If he makes it through the night, each of his heirs will receive their inheritance. What follows is a typical haunted house-style movie with thrills and chills and a predictable plot. The consensus from reviewers is that audiences will forget they even watched the movie as soon as the end credits roll.

The Inheritance has an awfully low rating on Rotten Tomatoes, earning it a 38% rating from critics. Audiences hated it more, and it sits at a dismal 28%. And it isn’t much better on IMDb, where viewers gave it a 4.7 / 10 rating. The set design and atmosphere get the most props, but ultimately the script is paper thin and characters aren’t fully developed. It begs the question, will it keep soaring on Hulu, or will it crash back down to Earth?

If you’re home for the Holidays, bored, and looking for some cheap scares, The Inheritance should provide a quick 84 minutes of fun. Just don’t think too hard about the script or characters. If you’d like a movie with a little more substance, check out List’s other ghostly film, Girl Haunts Boy, which fared better with critics and audiences. The Inheritance is streaming now on most streaming platforms.
