The Washington Commanders clinched a playoff spot with an overtime victory over the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday night.
It marked the first time Washington has made the playoffs since 2020. It marks the first time the team has reached 11 wins since 1991.
While it wasn’t an easy win by any means, Jayden Daniels and the Commanders offense came up clutch yet again when it mattered the most. After the Falcons tied up the game with an improbable touchdown pass from Michael Penix Jr. to Kyle Pitts on fourth down with less than a minute and 30 seconds remaining on the clock, Washington’s offense was stifled at the end of regulation.
A pass interference penalty with two seconds remaining in regulation gave the Falcons a chance to attempt a 56-yard field goal that would have won the game, but it came up short.
Washington won the coin toss — and like so many times earlier this season — Daniels orchestrated a beautiful 12-play, 70-yard drive that was capped off by his third touchdown pass of the night. The Commanders rookie found Zach Ertz on a quick slant in the end zone which sealed Washington’s playoff fate.
Daniels finished the game with 227 yards and three touchdowns through the air, while adding another 16 carries for 127 yards on the ground.
After the game as players and fans celebrated on the field and in the stands at Northwest Stadium.
But one of Washington’s leaders, Jeremy Reaves — who made it to the Pro Bowl last season as a special teams player — wasn’t done adding to the magical night.
Reaves proposed to his girlfriend on the field, in a scene that local reporters captured on camera and many fans were on hand to witness.
It was a cool scene in Washington, for sure.
In a heartwarming moment that left fans and teammates alike in tears, Commanders Pro-Bowler made a shocking and life-changing gesture on the field after defeating the Falcons.
After the final whistle blew and the Commanders secured a hard-fought victory, the Pro-Bowler took off his helmet and dropped down to one knee in the middle of the field. As the crowd fell silent, he reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box, opening it to reveal a sparkling diamond ring.
To the surprise of everyone watching, the Pro-Bowler turned to his girlfriend, who was watching from the stands, and asked her to marry him right then and there. With tears streaming down her face, she said yes, and the entire stadium erupted in cheers and applause.
The Commanders Pro-Bowler’s gesture not only sealed the victory on the field but also marked a new chapter in his life off the field. It was a moment that reminded everyone that there is more to sports than just winning and losing, and that love and dedication can shine through in the most unexpected ways.
As the Commanders celebrate their triumph over the Falcons, they will also be celebrating the love and commitment that was on full display on the field that day. It was a moment that will be remembered for years to come, and one that proves that sometimes the most important victories happen off the field.
