Community concerns over President Trump’s start of mass deportation plan

As President Trump begins following through on many of his campaign promises, many in our community are afraid of mass deportations beginning.

President Trump has already signed an executive order ending birthright citizenship, although it’s been met with lawsuits from 22 states.

Experts say anyone worried should seek legal representation. Seek legal representation, get your documents in order and be as prepared as you can be.

The Trump Administration’s promise of carrying out large-scale deportation of undocumented or illegal immigrants now looms for millions in America.

WSBT spoke with community members on Wednesday. Many say they’re scared of what’s to come and know many others who share that sentiment.

It’s hard to estimate exactly how many undocumented people are at risk, experts say that number ranges anywhere from 11 to 14 million people. Because that number is so large, many brought up the question of exactly how the administration could round up that many undocumented immigrants.

One immigration law expert says it’s a tall task.

“What we know is we don’t have the resources, either in the criminal justice system or the immigration enforcement system to removal 13 million people. So, you have to sort of figure out how you’re going to prioritize, who you’re going to target, what you’re going to go after, who you’re going to go after,” said Erin Corcoran, ND Keough School of Global Affairs Faculty Member.

Locally, the non-profit organization La Casa De Amistad is already helping those in need by providing resources and answering your questions regarding policy change.

CEO Juan Constantino says he wants to make sure anyone in their community knows they have help if they need it.

“If anyone has any questions, any doubts about the rights that they may have or issues that they run into, we encourage them to please call La Casa de Amistad, send us a message even on social media, on our website, whatever it takes,” said Constantino.

La Casa de Amistad also announced new leadership in their Immigration Legal Clinic with Director Sean O’Brien.

He reiterates the importance of representation.

“There are things that have yet to take place that folks in the community are concerned about. And what we ask them to do is to reach out to trusted legal representation. And we’re pleased to be able to provide expanded legal representation here at La Casa,” said O’Brien.

Though only time will tell how President Trump tackles the threat, one legal expert says the looming deportations could have serious implications on the economy — and not in a positive way.

“Many of the fruits and vegetables that are picked and harvested are done by immigrants. You could see a definite impact, I think, directly on our ability to access consumer goods, particularly in the food space and in the construction space,” said Corcoran.

Corcoran advises anyone with concerns or questions regarding policy change to seek legal representation.

As President Trump’s administration announces plans to begin mass deportations of undocumented immigrants, many members of the community are expressing serious concerns and fears about the impact of these actions.

The prospect of widespread deportations has sparked fear and anxiety among immigrant communities, with many worried about the potential separation of families and the disruption of people’s lives. Additionally, there are concerns about the potential for racial profiling and discrimination in the enforcement of these deportation policies.

Many community leaders and advocates are also raising questions about the morality and ethics of mass deportations, arguing that they go against the values of compassion and fairness that should guide our immigration policies.

As the debate over immigration policy continues to heat up, it is clear that the issue of mass deportations is deeply troubling for many members of the community. It is important for all of us to engage in thoughtful and respectful dialogue on this important issue, and to work towards solutions that are humane, just, and in line with our shared values of compassion and inclusivity.
