Several other major retailers are following Costco’s New Year’s closure.
Aldi supermarkets and Sam’s Club warehouses will also close their doors on New Year’s Day.
“We want our employees to enjoy the holiday with their loved ones,” said a Sam’s Club spokesperson.
The retailer will operate with reduced hours on New Year’s Eve, closing at 6 p.m. instead of the usual 8 p.m.
Walmart, Target, and Kroger have announced they will maintain normal operating hours on New Years.
“All Kroger locations will operate under regular business hours both New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day,” according to the company’s website.
Normal operations for all affected retailers will resume on January 2, 2025.
In a surprising move, Costco has announced that it will be shutting down 500 of its stores across the country for 24 hours. This decision comes as a response to the ongoing labor disputes and protests from its employees demanding better pay and working conditions.
In a similar move, Aldi has also announced that it will be closing all of its stores for the same 24-hour period in solidarity with Costco employees.
This mass shutdown is expected to have a significant impact on shoppers who rely on these popular warehouse stores for their everyday needs. Customers are encouraged to plan ahead and shop at alternative stores during this temporary closure.
Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
