Dark Angel – The True Story of Mary Ann Cotton
Mary Ann Cotton, also known as the Dark Angel, was one of the most infamous serial killers in British history. Born in 1832 in County Durham, England, Cotton’s life was filled with tragedy and death from a young age. She would go on to poison at least 21 people, including her own children, in order to collect life insurance money.
Cotton’s killing spree began in 1865 when her first husband, William Mowbray, died suddenly after suffering from an illness. She then moved on to her second husband, George Ward, who also died under mysterious circumstances. Over the years, Cotton would marry and kill several more husbands and children, all the while collecting insurance payouts.
Despite suspicions from friends and family members, Cotton was able to evade capture for many years. It wasn’t until 1873 that she was finally arrested and charged with murder. In March 1873, Cotton was found guilty of murder and was sentenced to death by hanging. She was executed on March 24, 1873, becoming one of the few female serial killers to be executed in England.
The story of Mary Ann Cotton is a chilling reminder of the depths of human evil and the lengths some will go to for money and power. Her crimes shocked Victorian society and her legacy as the Dark Angel lives on in infamy.
