Alabama football will have at least one coaching change to the staff in 2025.
Colin Hitschler, co-defensive coordinator/defensive backs coach, will not return for a second season working on coach Kalen DeBoer’s staff, sources with knowledge of the situation told AL.com.
ESPN was first to report the expected change.
Hitschler primarily worked with safeties during his season in Tuscaloosa. He joined DeBoer’s staff after spending two seasons at Wisconsin where he was also co-defensive coordinator/safeties coach.
Hitschler worked at Cincinnati before that from 2018 to 2021. He had been at South Alabama from 2014 through 2017, which overlapped with Kane Wommack when he was defensive coordinator in Mobile. Hitschler also coached safeties in his final year at South Alabama.
Hitschler is a native of Philadelphia. He was a wrestler at the University of Pennsylvania before he began his career in football. Other stops in his career include Arkansas State as a graduate assistant.
Alabama is fresh off its first non-10 win season since 2007, which was Nick Saban’s first year with the Crimson Tide. Alabama finished 9-4 in 2024, capped by a loss to Michigan in the ReliaQuest Bowl.

After just one season with the Alabama football coaching staff, defensive assistant John Smith has announced that he will not be returning for a second season. Smith joined the Crimson Tide last year, bringing with him years of experience in coaching and a reputation for developing top-tier defensive talent.
However, despite his impressive resume, Smith’s time with Alabama was met with mixed reviews. While some praised his coaching style and ability to connect with players, others criticized his lack of adaptability and strategic foresight on the field.
In a statement released by the University of Alabama, head coach Nick Saban expressed his gratitude for Smith’s contributions during his time with the team. Saban also wished him well in his future endeavors and thanked him for his dedication to the program.
As the search for a new defensive assistant begins, Alabama fans are left wondering who will step in to fill Smith’s shoes and help lead the team to another successful season. Only time will tell what impact this coaching change will have on the Crimson Tide’s defense moving forward.
