MOBILE, Ala. — Alabama football has seen its share of movement on its defensive coaching staff, adding former North Carolina defensive backs coach Jason Jones and naming Chuck Morrell as linebackers coach.
But after Ryan Grubb was fired as the Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator, Kalen DeBoer was asked about bringing Grubb, who worked with the Alabama football coach at Sioux Falls, Eastern Michigan, Fresno State and Washington, onto the Crimson Tide staff in 2025.
“We go way back,” DeBoer said at the Senior Bowl on Tuesday. “Great friend of mine. I think the world of him as a football coach and obviously as a person too. I know he is working through his process just after what last season brought. Just kind of see what he does there. Here for him whenever he needs me, and that’s always going to be the case.”
Grubb was initially hired to be Alabama’s offensive coordinator in 2024 and was seen recruiting for the Crimson Tide. He instead took the Seahawks offensive coordinator job.

Alabama instead hired Nick Sheridan as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

In nine seasons as a college football offensive coordinator, Grubb has led offenses that have eclipsed 400 yards of offense per game six times, including a Washington offense that averaged over 515 yards per game in 2022.
Each one of those offenses have averaged more than 30 points per game.
In his one season with the Seattle Seahawks, Grubb had the eighth-best passing game in the NFL, averaging 236.5 yards passing per game with Geno Smith at the helm. However, the Seahawks had the fifth-worst run game in the league as one of five to average less than 100 yards rushing per game.

There has been speculation in the college football world about whether the Alabama football program, led by head coach Kalen DeBoer, considered hiring Ryan Grubb as part of their coaching staff. Grubb, who has made a name for himself as an up-and-coming offensive mind, has been linked to several high-profile coaching vacancies in recent years.
With Alabama known for its high-powered offense and innovative play-calling, many fans and analysts believe that Grubb could be a good fit for the Crimson Tide. His track record of developing talented quarterbacks and his ability to adapt his scheme to fit his personnel make him an attractive candidate for any program looking to take their offense to the next level.
While there has been no official confirmation of any discussions between Alabama and Grubb, the idea of him joining forces with DeBoer and the Crimson Tide is certainly an intriguing one. Only time will tell if this potential coaching collaboration will come to fruition, but one thing is for certain – the football world will be watching closely to see how this story unfolds.
