The hypocrisy of ESPN now claiming disgust over Bronny James goes back most glaringly to draft day — I believe it was the second of the new two-day draft, another Adam Silver special — when its coverage tried to establish a hot market for Bronny. The network suggested on several occasions that Bronny might not be available when the Lakers chose. A Lakers reporter pulled a quote from Anthony Davis about how Bronny can “guard multiple positions” and “turn into an elite shotmaker.”
“Certainly he’s a name worth watching,” Dave McMenamin said on the broadcast. “We’re just waiting to see, like the Lakers are waiting to see, if he’ll still be available when we get to No. 55.”
Of course, the truth was always that Bronny would be drafted by the Lakers, and that he was neither ready for the NBA nor worthy of any 2024 pick. As one executive texted a few days before the draft, “If his name were Joe Thomas, we wouldn’t be talking about him. I don’t really see it right now. If he had another two years in college, it might be different but not sure.”
Still, ESPN built their entire draft coverage around a forgone nepotism pick, and now, over seven months later, tried to present Bronny’s struggles as both predictable and an indictment on LeBron’s parenting.
ESPN’s convenient Bronny James about-face: A network trying to have it two ways
In the world of sports media, it seems like everyone is always trying to have it both ways. And nowhere is this more evident than in the case of Bronny James, the teenage son of NBA superstar LeBron James.
When Bronny first burst onto the scene as a promising young basketball player, ESPN was quick to jump on the bandwagon, hyping up his every move and treating him like the next big thing. But as soon as Bronny started to face some challenges on the court, the network seemed just as quick to distance itself from him, seemingly abandoning him in favor of other, more successful athletes.
But now, in a stunning about-face, ESPN seems to be back on the Bronny bandwagon, once again hyping up his potential and acting like he’s the next big thing. It’s a convenient change of heart that has left many fans scratching their heads and wondering just what the network’s true intentions are.
Is ESPN genuine in its support of Bronny James, or is it just trying to have it both ways, using him when it’s convenient and discarding him when it’s not? Only time will tell, but one thing is for sure: the network’s handling of the young basketball star has left a bad taste in the mouths of many sports fans.
