One of the biggest horror franchises that traumatized an entire generation is making its highly anticipated return after over a decade. The first Final Destination movie came out in 2000, and it introduced an ingenious concept that went on to produce four more films. The franchise’s dedicated formula to construct a gory horror of sorts around the idea that death cannot be cheated cemented it as one of the most definitive in the genre.
The Final Destination movies were touted for their creativity and a pronounced passion for breaking one of the horror genre’s most beloved fan-favorite tropes. The movies never had a final girl or boy, which made making sequels all the more interesting. Now, after almost 14 years, the franchise has been revived with Final Destination: Bloodlines, the sixth installment in the horror franchise, which is set to release in 2025.
What Is Final Destination 6’s Potential Plot
The Film Will Introduce a New Group Of Catastrophe Survivors
The Final Destination franchise started its blockbuster journey with the slogan “Death cannot be cheated,” and that simplistic idea culminated into a multi-film phenomenon. The Final Destination films have racked in millions of dollars globally by engrossing viewers into an obscure concept in which the movie never needed to rely on jumpscares or ghostly figures. Despite having a successful run, it seemed that the franchise was done for good after it remained dormant for more than a decade. A sequel seemed like an impossibility after each passing year until March 2024, when the franchise’s producer took to social media to announce its revival.
Craig Perry confirmed that Final Destination 6 or Final Destination: Bloodlines was indeed filming, and if things remain on schedule, the film will be slated for a 2025 release. Of course, details about the movie’s plot are being kept under wraps, but it’s obvious that the sixth installment will showcase the fundamental aspects of its predecessors. According to reports, Final Destination: Bloodlines will revolve around the life of an 18-year-old girl named Stefani who suffers from premonitions of dying in a tower accident in the 1960s.

It’s later revealed that the visions are actually about Stefani’s grandmother, who had been evading death for more than 50 years. However, visions mean that Death is looming over one’s head, and it won’t be long before it comes for whoever cheats it. Stefani learns that her grandmother defying the inevitable has resulted in the longevity of those who were supposed to die in the catastrophe. Death will come after not only those who survived but will also take their bloodline. Understandably, Final Destination 6 may follow the formulaic path, but unlike its predecessors, the sequel might finally talk about the reason why certain people have visions of the future.
Who Is Returning to Fight Death Again?
A Whole New Cast Has Been Lined Up For the Legacy Sequel
No one similar cast has ever returned for a consecutive film in the franchise except for a few integral characters like Ali Larter’s Clear Rivers, who was in the first and the second films. Apart from her, Tony Todd’s William Bludworth has reprised his iconic role as the unsettling mortician in the first, second, and fifth installments. Surprisingly, the veteran actor was the first one to be confirmed for the sequel, but unfortunately, Todd passed away in November 2024, leaving the fate of his character hanging. It’s unclear at this point whether Todd was able to finish filming for his role. However, the official cast list does not include Todd’s name, which raises questions about his role in the movie. Fortunately, there’s an impressive lineup besides Todd, who will be bringing to life the familiar suspense and chill to the screens.

The Final Destination Movies, Ranked
Death cannot be cheated. The best Final Destination movies show characters meeting gruesome fates when they try to outwit the grim reaper.
It’s safe to say that Final Destination has been the culprit that traumatized an entire generation with log trucks and gymnastics routines. The franchise capitalized on the universal fear of the inevitable that had such a lasting cultural impact. Ultimately, there’s no such thing as the “best” time to revive a franchise or release a horror flick. Considering the success of recent legacy franchises like Scream and Halloween, it seems like the upward trend might also rub on Final Destination. It’s not like the sequel will not have big shoes to fill because, for a franchise that banks on killing characters in the most outrageous way possible, Bloodlines will genuinely have to outperform in that department to rejuvenate the franchise.
Is Bloodlines Connected to Its Predecessor
Fans Can Expect A Few Legacy Secrets to Be Finally Revealed
According to Jeffrey Reddick, franchise creator and screenwriter for the original movie, it’s apparent that the sequel is going to be a true Final Destination movie, but it won’t be too dependent on the formula. The Final Destination films have thrived on the vitality of the franchise’s concept of introducing a new group every time who think they cheated Death, but it always comes to bite them at the end. Reddick implied that while the franchise has been pretty much formulaic with minor tweaks every time, Bloodlines will not be as predictable. Having said that, Reddick thinks that 18-year-old Stefani’s story will be more layered and expansive than the previous ones. He emphasized the fact that viewers should not believe that the new film will be like a deconstructive version of the original idea; rather, it would be more self-explanatory.
“[FD6 is not just going to be another kid of ‘we set up a group of people, they cheat death, and then just death gets them,’…this is a true Final Destination movie, but it doesn’t follow that kind of formula that we’ve kind of established.” – Jeffery Reddick to Hidden Remote
It’s safe to say that Bloodlines will be a true Final Destination movie, in essence, but it will be more about that unique angle that has been embedded to make the film stand out. Reddick emphasized that viewers will be interested in the movie’s unique setup as the plot will be deeply layered, especially in terms of how to escape Death in practicality. At this point, it’s difficult to tell whether the sequel will have anything to do with the previous movies. The creators haven’t confirmed anything, but Todd’s return as the mischievous mortician could indicate otherwise. Final Destination films have been terrific as standalone movies, and their lack of connection might be the reason why the franchise has survived conventionality and a formula-centric approach. However, it might be high time that the franchise explored the origin of the premonitions.

Since the films portray Death as an entity that can think and orchestrate freak accidents flawlessly, the upcoming sequel should dwell on the ominous connection between the person having the visions and Death itself. Moreover, Final Destination films have been ambiguous about the “weapon” or the loophole that can help the victims escape Death indefinitely. Every iteration has always cleverly given people hope that someone will survive or outsmart Death, but they never do. However, if Stefani’s grandmother has been escaping death for the past 50 years, she must have cracked the code, making that angle a pivotal aspect of the new story. Ultimately, only fans can decide whether this acclaimed horror franchise still has what it takes to be extraordinary in an increasingly saturated genre.
