The Bill Belichick era can now officially begin at UNC after the Tar Heels suffered a 27-14 loss to UConn in the Fenway Bowl. And while the 72-year-old has never coached at the college level, one of his former players and Super Bowl champion offered up a bold prediction for Year 1.
“Bill Belichick will lead UNC to the College Football Playoff,” Jason McCourty said during Wednesday’s episode of ESPN’s “First Take.” “Yes, that is on his Christmas list that he is asking Santa — that you saw him post on his social media. That is right. Bill Belichick is now going the social media route to get recruits to come on campus. He wants all the good players.
“And I think he is going to shake things up,” he continued. “Bring in a general manager with him. Getting guys to come over (in) the transfer portal, and show them how to win football games. Bill Belichick. Playoffs. Those two words just go together.”
Belichick had a run of success in the NFL that spanned several decades and includes eight Super Bowl titles — six with the New England Patriots. McCorurty played under Belichick for three seasons and won one Super Bowl, so he’s seen first-hand how he runs a championship-caliber team and gets the most out of each player.
It remains to be seen how Belichick will fare at UNC. The Tar Heels went 6-7 in 2024, but his staff will include some familiar faces to him. His son, Steve Belichick, will be the defensive coordinator and Mike Lombardi, a close friend of Belichick’s, was named the program’s general manager. Freddie Kitchens, who took over for the fired Mack Brown, will remain on the staff.
Belichick’s first game with the Tar Heels is set for Aug. 30 against the TCU Horned Frogs, and it will certainly be interesting to see how his freshman season ends up.

In a recent interview with former New England Patriots cornerback, Aqib Talib, he made a bold prediction for Bill Belichick’s first year as the head coach of the University of North Carolina football team. Talib, who played under Belichick during his time with the Patriots, believes that the legendary coach will lead the Tar Heels to a national championship in his inaugural season.
Talib praised Belichick’s coaching prowess and attention to detail, stating that he has no doubt Belichick will transform the UNC football program into a powerhouse in college football. He emphasized Belichick’s ability to develop players and create a winning culture, which he believes will be key to the team’s success.
Many have questioned Belichick’s decision to leave the NFL and take on a college coaching role, but Talib is confident that it will be a successful move for the seasoned coach. He believes that Belichick’s experience and leadership will be invaluable in guiding the Tar Heels to a championship.
It remains to be seen if Talib’s prediction will come true, but one thing is for certain – Bill Belichick’s tenure at UNC will be one to watch.
