First Alert Weather Day issued for Sunday night and Monday, biggest impacts south of Fort Wayne

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) – The 21Alive Weather Team has issued a FIRST ALERT WEATHER DAY for the Sunday night and Monday time period due to an approaching winter storm that will impact much of the area, though to a larger degree south of Fort Wayne.

Before we expound further on the snow chances late in the weekend, let’s discuss some lesser, short term impacts: a clipper system moving in this evening!

TONIGHT: CLIPPER SYSTEM

A little light snow is expected due to a ‘clipper system’ sliding through the area this evening into the very early overnight hours Friday. Moisture is limited, as is the case with most clippers in this region, and a dusting to an inch can be expected. Though this won’t produce much snow, subfreezing surface temperatures will allow whatever falls to accumulate quickly, so slick spots are very possible into Friday morning!

SUNDAY NIGHT INTO MONDAY: GETTING A PIECE OF A LARGE WINTRY MIDWESTERN STORM

A much bigger, moisture-laden storm system (a “juicy” storm, as I like to call them) is set to spread into the Midwest Sunday and track east into Monday. We gave the “first alert” that this storm system was on the horizon several days ago and very few details have changed at this juncture. Right now, it appears the biggest impacts from this storm system will be across central Indiana versus northern, however parts of Northeast Indiana and Northwest Ohio, especially south of Fort Wayne/US 30 could still see several inches of accumulation.

Timing is still a bit on the tricky side, though initial estimates suggest snow will start across our southern counties Sunday evening (around sunset) and continue into Monday morning. While some Sunday evening travel could get tricky, especially toward Indianapolis, the biggest impacts locally will likely be felt Monday morning.

In Allen County north of Fort Wayne, lesser amounts can be expected with even lighter snow north toward the Michigan line.

Though this map is subject to change due to the fluidity of the storm track, forecast guidance suggests the following is most likely right now:

Bitterly cold air moves in by midweek next week with highs in the teens, so whatever falls late this weekend into early next week will stick around for a while!

Stay tuned to the forecast over the next several days as we fine tune this forecast!

Attention residents of Fort Wayne and surrounding areas, a First Alert Weather Day has been issued for Sunday night and Monday due to potentially severe weather expected to impact the region.
