Florida Highway Patrol Issues Safety Advisory Ahead of Incoming Storm

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) – As a storm approaches Florida, the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) is preparing to monitor Interstate 10 across Troop A and H, from Escambia County to Madison County. Officials are coordinating with partners, including local sheriff’s offices, Road Rangers, and the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), to address needs and provide services throughout the event.

FHP Captain Jason King emphasized the importance of public safety during the storm. “Your safety is of the utmost importance to us,” he said. “Please do your part to be prepared for the weather event, drive defensively, and Arrive Alive.”

Drivers are strongly encouraged to avoid roadways during the storm, but for those who must travel, FHP offers the following safety tips:

  • Plan Ahead: Allow extra travel time and avoid unnecessary trips.
  • Drive Cautiously: Reduce speed, increase following distance, and be alert for changing road conditions.
  • Inspect Your Vehicle: Check tires, radiators, windshield wipers, and defrosters, and ensure your gas tank is full.
  • Watch for Black Ice: Rain or condensation can freeze on roadways, especially on bridges, which freeze faster than asphalt.

In the event of an emergency, drivers should call 911 or *FHP for assistance.

FHP also noted that headquarters staff and commercial vehicle enforcement teams are on standby to assist if a large-scale event occurs.

The public is urged to stay informed, stay prepared, and prioritize safety as the storm moves through the region.

With a powerful storm approaching Florida, the state’s Highway Patrol has issued a safety advisory to residents and travelers. The Florida Highway Patrol is urging everyone to take necessary precautions and stay informed about weather updates to ensure their safety on the roads.

In the advisory, the Highway Patrol emphasized the importance of reducing speed, increasing following distance, and avoiding unnecessary travel during severe weather conditions. They also reminded drivers to turn on their headlights in low visibility situations and to be extra cautious when driving through flooded areas.

Additionally, the Highway Patrol advised residents to secure loose outdoor items, trim trees and branches, and have an emergency kit ready in case of power outages or other emergencies.

As the storm approaches, it is crucial for everyone to stay vigilant and heed the warnings from authorities. By being prepared and taking precautions, we can all help ensure the safety of ourselves and others on the roads during this challenging time.
