Former Alabama receiver to get another chance for his first NFL catch

Tyrell Shavers has played in two regular-season games during his NFL career. He came up as a Buffalo Bills’ practice-squad elevation for a 23-20 loss to the Houston Texans on Oct. 6 and a 30-20 victory over the Indianpolis Colts on Nov. 10.

Shavers played 22 offensive snaps in the two games without quarterback Josh Allen throwing him the football. On Saturday, the Bills announced Shavers would be elevated to active status for Sunday’s game against the New York Jets.

Each NFL team can elevate two members of its practice squad to active status for each game. Shavers is up on Sunday with Buffalo wide receiver Curtis Samuel questionable to play because of a rib injury.

In three seasons at Alabama, Shavers had one reception and scored a touchdown on a blocked punt. After a redshirt year, he played in 28 games in 2018 and 2019 for Alabama.

Shavers had nine receptions after transferring to Mississippi State in 2020, then he played at San Diego State for two seasons. After catching 38 passes for 643 yards and three touchdowns for the Aztecs in 2022, Shavers signed with the Bills as a rookie free agent.

Shavers spent the 2023 NFL season on Buffalo’s practice squad without playing in a regular-season game, and he has been back in that role in 2024.

Two more players with Alabama football roots were elevated for Sunday’s games.

The Tennessee Titans elevated offensive lineman Chandler Brewer (Florence) for Sunday’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars with right guard Dillon Radunz out with a shoulder injury.

Brewer most recently played in an NFL regular-season game on Dec. 10, 2023, when he was with the Jaguars.

The Las Vegas Raiders elevated tight end John Samuel Shenker (Auburn) for Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Saints. Shenker has played in six games for the Raiders in 2024, getting 61 defensive snaps and 78 special-teams plays.

The Philadelphia Eagles will have defensive end Bryce Huff (St. Paul’s Episcopal) available on Sunday for the first time since Nov. 14 after activating him from injured reserve. A wrist injury kept Huff out of Philadelphia’s past five games. But he returned to practice on Dec. 18 and will be eligible to play against the Dallas Cowboys.

Former Alabama receiver, John Doe, is set to get another chance at achieving his first NFL catch. After going undrafted in the 2020 NFL Draft, Doe was signed by the New York Giants but was ultimately waived before the start of the season.

Despite the setback, Doe has continued to work hard and stay in shape, waiting for another opportunity to showcase his talents on the field. And now, his perseverance has paid off as he has been signed by the Seattle Seahawks to their practice squad.

Doe’s speed, route-running, and hands make him a promising prospect for the Seahawks, and he is eager to prove himself and make the most of this second chance. With his determination and dedication, there’s no doubt that he will make the most of this opportunity and finally secure his first NFL catch.

Stay tuned to see John Doe in action and watch as he takes full advantage of this second chance to make his mark in the NFL.
