Former Bruins defenseman a late add to NHL 4 Nations roster
A former Boston Bruins defenseman will join the NHL’s 4 Nations Face-Off.
Urho Vaakanainen was added to Finland’s roster on Sunday. The New York Rangers defenseman, along with Buffalo Sabres defenseman Henri Jokiharju are injury replacements for Dallas Stars’ Miro Heiskanen and Toronto Maple Leafs’ Jani Hakanpaa.
Vaakanainen has six assists in 26 games this season between the Anaheim Ducks and Rangers this season. The former first-round pick by the Bruins was part of the trade that sent Rangers captain Jacob Trouba to Anaheim earlier this season.
The 26-year-old made his NHL debut during the 2018-19 season with the Boston Bruins after being drafted by the team in the first round of the 2017 NHL Entry Draft.
In four seasons with Boston (31 games), Vaakanainen amassed six assists, blocked 34 shots and delivered 21 hits.
The NHL 4 Nations Face-Off begins Feb. 12 when Team Canada and Team Sweden open the tournament. Team USA takes on Team Finland on Feb. 13.
