Former Celtics guard under investigation in illegal betting probe
Former Celtics guard Terry Rozier has been under investigation from federal prosecutors to determine whether the veteran manipulated his performance as part of an illegal sports betting scheme, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Rozier has not been accused of wrongdoing at this point. However, the investigation is part of a wider government probe that is connected to the betting scheme that led to a lifetime ban for Raptors forward Jontay Porter last year.
According to the Journal, the gambling ring accused of conspiring with Porter to win bets in two games also bet heavily against Rozier in a 2023 game while he was with the Charlotte Hornets.
Looking at the game in question on March 23, 2023, Rozier played 9:34 that night, shooting 2-for-4 from the field and 1-of-3 on 3-pointers. His total stat line featured five points, four rebounds, two assists, one steal and a turnover.
Notably, Rozier left the game early because of a sore right foot. The Hornets lost 115-96 to the Pelicans to drop to 23-51 on the season. The Hornets were also shorthanded that game due to injury, and after Rozier left, they were down to just seven healthy players. Rozier did not play for the remainder of the regular season after this game.
“The league conducted an investigation and did not find a violation of NBA rules,” NBA spokesman Mike Bass told the Wall Street Journal. “We are now aware of an investigation by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York related to this matter and have been cooperating with that investigation.”
The veteran guard was drafted by the Celtics at No. 16 overall in 2015. He spent four seasons in Boston before he was traded to the Hornets in a sign-and-trade in July 2019. Rozier spent four seasons in Charlotte before he was dealt to the Miami Heat at last year’s trade deadline.
