HONOLULU, Hawai’i – The UC Santa Barbara Men’s Basketball team (8-5, 0-2 Big West) resume Big West play Thursday, Jan. 2 as they travel to Hawai’i to take on the Rainbow Warriors in their lone game of the week.
LAST TIME OUT
The Gauchos got back in the win column last Saturday with a 89-72 win over Westcliff. Four Gauchos scored in double figures with Deuce Turner leading all scorers with 21. Kenny Pohto posted 19 while Zion Sensley and Ariel Bland scored 13 and 10 respectively.
SCOUTING THE RAINBOW WARRIORS
Hawai’i comes into the contest with an 8-4 overall record and 0-1 Big West record. Their lone Big West loss came at Long Beach State. The Rainbow Warriors most recently hosted the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic in which they went 2-1 with wins over Charlotte and Oakland and their loss coming against Nebraska.
UH is one of the best teams in the country at getting to the free throw line, shooting almost 22 shots from the charity stripe which ranks 82nd in all of NCAA. One matchup to watch will be the battle on the boards with both teams ranking inside the top 70 in Division I in rebound margin.
The Gauchos should be able to continue to knock down shots from behind the arc with Hawai’i allowing opponents to shoot over 35 percent from three point land. Hawai’i ranks in the bottom 60 of Division I in defending the perimeter. The Rainbow Warriors also do not force a lot of turnovers which will allow UC Santa Barbara to maintain more possessions.
