Gervonta Davis and Ryan Garcia co-starred in one of 2023’s biggest boxing bouts.
After early pressure from Garcia, Davis scored a knockdown in the second and largely had his man on the back foot for the following five. In the seventh, ‘Tank’ landed a sneaky body shot that saw Garcia unable to make the count.
It was the first loss of Garcia’s campaign, which had previously consisted of 23 wins and 19 knockouts. The 26-year-old is well known for his speed of hand and a lethal hook that was on show in his most recent outing against Devin Haney, a win later changed to a no contest due to failed doping tests.
Though Davis was a comfortable winner, he did survive a couple of flurries in which he tasted Garcia’s power. Post-fight, though, he said he never felt troubled.
“He caught me with a shot? Oh, with the brick hand, with his right hand? It’s boxing, he probably caught me with a good shot. There was no shots that caught me today that I felt like I was in trouble. I just stayed calm. I felt like he was move anxious than me. You want to stay calm at all costs cause you don’t want to make a bad decision, and that’s what he did. He came in and he was rushing and he ran into a shot. I knew off the get go I want to stay calm and collected.”
‘Tank’ Davis recently responded to a fan on social media who said the rematch will never happen, saying, ‘yes it will.’ Garcia – who is suspended until April 2025 after the Haney bout – then responded, ‘let’s settle this.’
Davis returns to action against Lamont Roach Jr on March 1 in Brooklyn. He has announced he will retire at the end of the year – it remains to be seen whether or not the return fight with Garcia can be squeezed in before then.
Gervonta Davis Gives Honest Verdict On Ryan Garcia’s Power As Pair Verbally Agree To Rematch
In a recent interview, Gervonta “Tank” Davis opened up about his thoughts on Ryan Garcia’s punching power, as the two boxers have verbally agreed to a rematch in the near future.
Davis, known for his own knockout power, praised Garcia for his speed and accuracy in the ring, but admitted that he didn’t feel Garcia’s punches were as strong as some had claimed.
“I respect Ryan as a fighter, he’s got skills for sure,” Davis said. “But when it comes to power, I didn’t really feel it like that in our last fight. Maybe he’s been working on it, I don’t know. But I’m always ready for a challenge.”
The two fighters faced off in a highly anticipated bout last year, with Davis emerging victorious in a thrilling contest that went the distance. Now, with both fighters eager for a rematch, fans can expect another exciting showdown between two of the sport’s rising stars.
As the boxing world eagerly awaits confirmation of the rematch, one thing is for certain: when Davis and Garcia step back into the ring, fireworks are sure to follow. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting matchup.
