How many give up on their goals and when is ‘Quitter’s Day’

It’s the first week of January, which means gyms are likely packed, “Dry January” is as hip as ever and it seems as if everyone is looking to shed a few pounds.

‘Tis the season for New Year resolutions. But how long will those goals last? And how many people will see their resolutions continue through an entire calendar year?

It’s hard to make the “new year, new you” mindset stick, according to a 2023 study by Dr. Michelle Rozen, a bestselling author and psychologist who is also known as “The Change Doctor.”

Rozen’s findings suggest that only 6% of people keep their New Year’s resolutions.

The survey-based study focused on 999 participants, ages 20 through 60. Of the group, more than 80% of participants set a New Year’s resolution — but the resolutions were not long-kept.

Nearly one-third of goalsetters abandoned their aspirations in January. Another 63.5% of participants stopped pursuing their goals in February. Only 53 people reported sticking to their goals by June, according to the study findings.

When is ‘Quitter’s Day’?

“Quitter’s Day: How Many People Give Up on Their Goals and When Does It Happen?”

Have you ever set a goal for yourself, only to eventually give up on it? You’re not alone. Research has shown that a significant number of people abandon their New Year’s resolutions and other goals within the first few weeks of the year. In fact, there is even a specific day known as ‘Quitter’s Day’ that marks the point when many individuals throw in the towel on their aspirations.

According to data from Strava, a social fitness network, ‘Quitter’s Day’ typically falls on January 19th. This date is determined by analyzing when the highest number of people stop logging their workouts and activities, indicating a decline in motivation and commitment to their fitness goals. However, the concept of ‘Quitter’s Day’ can be applied to any type of goal, whether it’s related to health, career, relationships, or personal development.

So why do so many people give up on their goals? There are a variety of reasons, including lack of accountability, unrealistic expectations, fear of failure, and simply losing interest or motivation over time. It’s important to recognize that setbacks and challenges are a natural part of the goal-setting process, and it’s okay to adjust your goals or approach as needed.

If you find yourself struggling to stay on track with your goals, don’t be too hard on yourself. Remember that it’s never too late to refocus, recommit, and get back on track. Surround yourself with supportive friends and family, seek out resources and tools to help you stay motivated, and celebrate small victories along the way. Don’t let ‘Quitter’s Day’ define your journey towards success – keep pushing forward and believe in your ability to achieve your goals.
