IDAHO FALLS — With temperatures dropping to below zero this week, many people are cranking up the heat, but if residents aren’t careful, it could lead to power outages.
Rocky Mountain Power spokesman David Eskelsen says freezing temperatures can cause electrical problems, and increased usage can put added strain on the power grid.
“Extreme weather of any kind does introduce stresses on the system because those are the times when customers typically use more energy than other times,” Eskelsen said. “That’s when normal wear and tear on the system can expose weak points.”
Eskelsen says their systems are built to handle cold temperatures, but customers should be mindful of how much energy they use to reduce the chances of outages or other issues.
He suggests using high-use appliances outside of peak times, which are mornings between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m. and evenings between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m.
Rocky Mountain Power also recommends these tips to stay warm while saving energy.
“Be aware of the energy that you’re using and make sure it’s only what you need,” Eskelsen said.

With the winter season upon us, many of us are looking for ways to stay warm without breaking the bank on energy bills. Here are some tips on how to save on energy while staying warm:
1. Seal up any drafts: Check for drafts around windows, doors, and other areas where cold air may be seeping in. Use weather stripping or caulking to seal up these drafts and keep the warm air inside.
2. Use a programmable thermostat: Set your thermostat to lower temperatures when you’re not at home or when you’re sleeping. This can help you save on energy costs without sacrificing comfort.
3. Dress in layers: Instead of cranking up the heat, try layering up with sweaters, blankets, and warm socks to stay cozy.
4. Use ceiling fans: Running your ceiling fan in reverse can help circulate warm air throughout the room, allowing you to lower the thermostat a few degrees.
5. Let the sunshine in: Open up your curtains during the day to let the sunlight in and naturally warm up your home. Close them at night to trap the heat inside.
6. Use a space heater: If you’re only using one room in your home, consider using a space heater to heat that specific area instead of heating the entire house.
By following these tips, you can stay warm and comfortable during the winter months while also saving on energy costs. Stay cozy and budget-friendly this winter!
