EAST LANSING — Two historic rivals are set to go at it on the ice once again as the Michigan Wolverines head west to wrap up their weekend set against the Michigan State Spartans on Saturday night.

The Wolverines and Spartans kicked off the weekend on Friday night at Yost with another exciting battle. The teams traded goals throughout the game, but the packed house in Ann Arbor was treated to free hockey as the game went into overtime. Garrett Schifsky sent the home fans away happy, with his goal in the first minute of the extra period giving the Wolverines a 3-2 victory.

The Spartans came into the weekend riding a nine-game unbeaten streak, though they left Hockey Valley last week on a whimper after falling to Penn State in a shootout. Nevertheless, Michigan State is considerably one of the best teams in the country, as Adam Nightingale’s team continues to impress with its high-end talent and grit to pull out close games.

The Wolverines are a team searching for consistency in order to be considered one of the top teams in the Big Ten. In their last three conference weekends, Michigan has split with the likes of Notre Dame, Ohio State and Wisconsin, not to mention that they were swept by Minnesota in early December.

MSU fell to second in the Big Ten, one point back of Minnesota, while UM is down in fourth, nine points back of the Spartans.

After Friday night’s result, the Wolverines are 178-142-24 against the Spartans.
