‘I Really Think That Was a Setup’

Brett Favre has seen big wins, brutal hits, and some seriously strange encounters, but nothing quite prepared him for this moment. Picture it: a football legend minding his business when, out of nowhere, former New York Jets pass-rusher Mark Gastineau rolls up with an unexpected confrontation.

Favre, never one to back down, couldn’t help but wonder — was this all a setup?

Brett Favre Calls Out ESPN for ‘Setting Up’ Awkward Mark Gastineau Confrontation

Favre thought he was in for a routine memorabilia signing until Gastineau showed up with unfinished business. Favre wasn’t buying the coincidence.

“There are athletes from all sports; generally, it’s retired guys,” Favre said on “The Michele Tafoya Podcast,” referring to the uncomfortable moment when the former Jets pass-rusher confronted him at a memorabilia show in Chicago.

“So, you encounter a lot of different guys, but I had no clue, and I really think that was a setup by ESPN and/or NFL Films. Because there was a camera hiding above this divider. Now, I think Mark has got some serious concussion issues, but I’m not a doctor.”

The issue, though? Gastineau still holds a grudge over Favre’s infamous sack that gave Michael Strahan the NFL’s single-season sack record (22.5 in 2001), surpassing Gastineau’s 22.0 from 1984.

The exchange, which aired in the “30 for 30” titled “The New York Sack Exchange,” didn’t look friendly. Favre went in for a handshake, but Gastineau wasn’t having it.

“I had never met him before … and he actually came right to the table — he’s still a big guy — I was just signing … I looked up and I said, ‘Hey, Mark!’ and right away, I knew, he wasn’t all there. Honestly, I was thinking, the last thing I want to have to do is fight this guy right here,” Favre recalled.

Favre believes ESPN and NFL Films orchestrated the moment. “There was a camera hiding above this divider,” he pointed out. Meanwhile, Gastineau claims he didn’t know Favre would be at the event. His former Jets teammate Marty Lyons even tried stopping him.

NFL Films’ Ken Rodgers (the documentary’s director) insists it wasn’t planned. But ESPN knew this would be gold for the “30 for 30” promotion. A heated exchange between two NFL legends would be perfect headline material.

Favre isn’t just talking football these days. On Thursday, Jan. 30, the Hall of Famer took to X (formerly known as Twitter) with a somber message, sending condolences to the victims of a tragic plane crash in Washington, D.C., the previous day.

“Plane crash in DC last night was sad to see and certainly a sad and tragic situation,” Favre wrote. “My condolences go out to all the families that lost loved ones and who were affected by it.”

The crash, involving an American Airlines jet and a U.S. Army helicopter, left no survivors among the 64 people aboard both aircraft, according to officials.

Fans quickly reacted, flooding his post with messages of support. One user responded, “Very sad! Praying for the victims’ families!” Another added, “Praying with and for you, Brett!” Within minutes, the post had over 4,500 views.

Favre, who’s been vocal on X about everything from concussions to youth football risks, took a pause from gridiron talk to acknowledge the tragedy. And for many, his heartfelt words meant more than any highlight reel.

I Really Think That Was a Setup

Have you ever found yourself in a situation that just didn’t feel right? Like everything was too perfect, too convenient, too orchestrated? I recently had an experience that left me questioning whether it was all just a setup.

It all started when a friend invited me to a party at a swanky rooftop bar in the city. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to go at first, but she assured me it would be a great time. When we arrived, everything seemed to fall into place perfectly – we got a prime spot by the bar, the drinks were flowing, and the music was just right.

But as the night went on, I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off. People seemed to be watching us, whispering to each other when they thought we weren’t looking. And then, out of nowhere, an ex-boyfriend of mine showed up, acting like he just happened to be in the area.

I couldn’t help but feel like the whole night was a setup. Was my friend in on it? Did someone set me up to run into my ex? Was there a hidden agenda behind the seemingly innocent invitation to the party?

I may never know for sure, but one thing is certain – I won’t be so quick to trust the perfect timing and convenience of certain situations in the future. Sometimes, things really are too good to be true.
