Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar—a space exploration opus starring Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway—is new on Netflix following its successful 10th anniversary re-release in theaters.
Directed by Christopher Nolan, who co-wrote the screenplay with his brother, Jonathan Nolan, Interstellar was initially released in theaters on Nov. 5, 2014, before expanding to a nationwide release on Nov. 7, 2015.
On Dec. 6, 2024, Interstellar was re-released in 165 IMAX theaters in North America to celebrate the film’s 10th Anniversary for what was supposed to be a one-week exclusive engagement.
However, due to the popularity of the re-release, Interstellar expanded to 321 IMAX screens for a second week and ended its 10th anniversary run on Dec. 20. Per Box Office Mojo, Interstellar made $15.2 million during its two-week 10th anniversary re-release.
According to Netflix, Interstellar debuted on the streaming platform on Thursday, Jan. 1, 2025.
In addition, Christopher Nolan’s mind-bending 2010 crime thriller Inception also joined Netflix’s streaming lineup on Jan. 1.
What Is ‘Interstellar’ About?
The official logline for Interstellar reads, “When Earth becomes uninhabitable in the future, a farmer and ex-NASA pilot, Joseph Cooper, is tasked to pilot a spacecraft, along with a team of researchers, to find a new planet for humans.”
Matthew McConaughey stars as Cooper in Interstellar, while Hathaway also stars as Dr. Emilia Brand, the daughter of a fellow revered scientist, Dr. John Brand (Michael Caine). Cooper and Emilia are joined on the Interstellar mission to find a new planet by scientists Doyle (Wes Bently) and Romilly (David Gyasi).
Jessica Chastain also stars in Interstellar as the grown-up version of Cooper’s daughter, Murph (Mackenzie Foy), while Casey Affleck plays the grown-up version of Cooper’s son, Tom (Timothée Chalamet). Interstellar also stars John Lithgow Cooper’s father-in-law, Donald.
By coincidence, McConaughey and Chalamet reunited during the theatrical re-release of Interstellar during a college football game between the Georgia Bulldogs and Texas Longhorns on Dec. 7.
Chalamet, who documented the reunion on his Instagram page, was at the game as part of his promotional tour for his new Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown.
Fearing a photo of he and McConaughey on the sidelines during the game, Chalamet wrote in the post, “my movie dad Cooper,” which was accompanied by a smiling emoji.
In addition to the theatrical re-release of Interstellar, Paramount Pictures Home Entertainment also recently released a special 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray Collector’s Edition of Interstellar to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the film.
