Three weeks into 2025, a substantial amount of broadcast shows have already returned, with Brilliant Minds airing an eventful Season 1 finale on NBC, and shows like Will Trent, High Potential, The Rookie, and Abbott Elementary airing new episodes on ABC. In the coming days, weeks, and months even more new and returning network shows are set to premiere. So when does our dearly beloved 9-1-1 return with new episodes? Decider has the answer.

When 9-1-1‘s midseason finale (Season 8, Episode 8) aired back on November 21, 2024, it didn’t leave us with any major cliffhangers aside from Eddie (Ryan Guzman) potentially moving to Texas to be closer to Christopher (Gavin McHugh). But based on everything we know, Season 8, Episode 9 is about to majorly shake things up.

When 9-1-1 returns, we’re in for a hostage situation, a serial killer, and a potential Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) kidnapping. “[Maddie’s] pregnancy story will factor in not insignificantly in the first two episodes when we come back,” co-creator and showrunner Tim Minear told Decider ahead of the hiatus. So what else can fans expect? And when can they expect it?

Sadly, Ryan Murphy Thursdays haven’t returned to ABC yet. While there’s no new episode of 9-1-1 airing tonight, January 16, on ABC, another new episode of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition is premiering on the network at 8:00 p.m. ET.

When Does 9-1-1 Return With New Episodes? 9-1-1 Season 8, Episode 9 Premiere Date:

After its midseason finale aired on November 21, 9-1-1 went on hiatus for several months. Currently, the series is set return with new episodes on Thursday, March 6, 2025 ahead of fellow Ryan Murphy series, Doctor Odyssey.

What Time Is 9-1-1 On ABC?

When 9-1-1 returns, Season 8, Episode 9 will premiere on Thursday, March 6, 2025 at 8:00 p.m. ET on ABC.

9-1-1 Season 8 Filming Updates:

Following the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles, a number of productions temporarily shut down, including all of 20th Television’s LA-based series. Per Deadline, however, Grey’s Anatomy, Doctor Odyssey, and 9-1-1 — all of which will film indoors — will resume production on Tuesday January 14.

On January 15, the official 9-1-1 Instagram account also released a statement about the wildfires, saying, “9-1-1 is honored to tell stories about the courage of real-life first responders. We thank them for their bravery fighting the LA wildfires and are proud to support their efforts through Disney’s %15 million donation for immediate response and rebuilding efforts, which includes support of the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation, among other organizations.”

What Will 9-1-1 Season 8, Episode 9 (And Beyond) Be About? Showrunner Tim Minear Weighs In:

If you haven’t read Tim Minear’s full midseason finale interview with Decider, now’s the perfect time! As noted above, when we left Eddie, he was considering a move to Texas to be closer to his son Chris. Minear confirmed that Eddie’s life will still be “in flux” when 9-1-1 returns, and though fans may have a hard time imagining one of 9-1-1‘s core character relocating long-term, Minear assured Decider that “Eddie is dead serious about doing whatever he has to do to repair that relationship, so if that means moving to Texas, maybe that’s what he has to do.”

If Eddie does make a move, there’s no doubt that his bestie Buck (Oliver Stark) will take the news the hardest. (Especially since he’s still recovering from his breakup and his sister possibly gets kidnapped?! Let Buck Rest.) Minear said fans expect a major spiral from Stark’s character: “Buck is going to be spinning like a top by the time we come back. [He’s] not wanting to be a bad friend, and not wanting to be selfish. There’s just no way he’s not going to spiral about this.” However, he also said Buck will find some sort of distraction, though he didn’t specify if it would be a person. “He’s going to have to find something to latch onto to keep from completely spinning out of control. And he will find that. He will find that when we come back,” Minear said. “We’ll see about that and how long that lasts — these relationships don’t tend to last all that long.”

As for other personal storylines, Minear said, “The Bobby and Athena building a new house story, we’ll hit that pretty hard in Episode 11… We’ll also get to see Buck dealing with his abandonment issues. And then Episode 10 is just going to be thrilling. It’s going to be a thriller. And by the end of Episode 10, everybody’s life is changed.” Ultimately, the showrunner described his goal for the back half of Season 8 as “to blow it all the hell apart.”
