Users across the globe reported widespread outages of the popular AI chatbot, ChatGPT.
Reports of the service being unavailable began surging on Thursday morning, leaving many unable to access the conversational AI tool.
At the time of writing, OpenAI, the startup company behind the chatbot, states on its Status website that the issue “has now been resolved.”
Writing on the website, the company said: “This issue has now been resolved. Between 3:33 AM and 4:23 AM PST, customers experienced elevated error rates on ChatGPT and the API.”
Tibor Blaho, Lead Engineer at tech company AIPRM, wrote on Thursday morning: “ChatGPT seems to be down at the moment”, before adding: “OpenAI team is working on service recovery”.
Downdetector, a website that tracks online service disruptions, registered a significant spike in outage reports for ChatGPT on Thursday morning.
ChatGPT is a large language model AI chatbot. In August 2024, OpenAI said ChatGPT had more than 200 million weekly active users, double the number it had in the same period the previous year.
The cause of the outage is currently unknown. However, OpenAI’s Status website put out a statement at 07:26 AM stating: “The issue has been identified and a fix is being implemented.”
At the time of writing, the website carries a message reading “All Systems Operational’.
This is a developing story and will be updated when more information is available.

Recently, many users have reported experiencing outages with ChatGPT, leading to questions about whether the popular AI chatbot service is down. The sudden spike in reported issues has left many wondering what could be causing these disruptions.
Some users have taken to social media to express their frustration, with many reporting difficulties in accessing the service or experiencing unexpected errors while using ChatGPT. This has raised concerns about the reliability of the platform and its ability to handle high volumes of traffic.
While the exact cause of these outages remains unclear, it is possible that ChatGPT is experiencing technical difficulties or undergoing maintenance. It is also possible that the increased demand for the service has put a strain on its servers, leading to performance issues for some users.
For now, it is recommended that users affected by these outages try to refresh the page, clear their browser cache, or wait for the issue to be resolved by the ChatGPT team. In the meantime, users can also check the official ChatGPT status page or social media channels for updates on the situation.
Overall, the spike in outages reported by users highlights the importance of reliability and scalability in AI chatbot services, and serves as a reminder of the potential challenges that can arise when dealing with complex technologies.
