Jim Ross Explains Why He Was A Little Surprised By The Buzz About Penta’s WWE Debut
Jim Ross comments on Penta’s WWE debut.
Penta, formerly known as Penta El Zero Miedo, joined AEW in 2019. During his time with the company, he held the AEW World Tag Team Championship and the AEW World Trios Championship. He also won the ROH World Tag Team Championship. Penta left AEW when his contract expired in December 2024. He then signed with WWE and debuted on the January 13th episode of WWE Raw, where he defeated Chad Gable. Fans buzzed about Penta’s debut, and his presentation was widely praised.
Speaking on his Grilling JR podcast, Jim Ross was asked about the buzz surrounding Penta’s WWE debut.
“I was a little surprised. We had him here at AEW for a good while. Soft-spoken guy, no trouble. Hardly knew he was there until he got in the ring, and then he was phenomenal. But I was a little surprised at the hype. So what it tells me is that WWE and Triple H covet him in a significant way, where he’s gonna be in main events or semi-main events within the next year, if not sooner. But I was a little surprised. There’s so many guys doing that act, that bit, that routine, of the luchadores. When I hired Rey Mysterio, we didn’t have anybody that even compared to Rey, but really nobody in the business did. He was special, unique. He’s one of a kind. I don’t know…Penta, we had a lot of that kind of style in AEW. He was one of many that did a lot of acrobatics and flying things. He might have been the best at doing it, I’m not saying that. But he wasn’t the only one doing it, so it made it less special. WWE’s got a good stock of luchadores. They got several guys on the roster that have that background. Just gotta be careful of how you book him,” Ross said.

Jim Ross, legendary wrestling commentator, recently sat down for an interview to discuss the buzz surrounding Penta’s WWE debut. Ross admitted that he was a little surprised by the level of excitement and hype surrounding Penta’s arrival in the company.
“I’ve seen a lot of talented wrestlers come and go over the years, so I didn’t expect the buzz around Penta’s debut to be as big as it was,” Ross explained. “But I think it just goes to show how passionate and dedicated wrestling fans are. They have a keen eye for talent and they know when someone has what it takes to make it big in the industry.”
Ross went on to praise Penta’s in-ring skills and charisma, saying that he has the potential to become a major player in WWE. “Penta is a unique talent with a lot of potential. He has a great look, he’s got a strong presence in the ring, and he knows how to connect with the audience. I think he’s going to do big things in WWE.”
Despite his initial surprise, Ross is excited to see what the future holds for Penta in WWE. “I can’t wait to see what Penta does next. He’s got all the tools to succeed in this business, and I have no doubt that he’s going to make a big impact in WWE.”
