It’s no secret which team Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin is rooting for in Thursday afternoon’s Sugar Bowl.
Kiffin offered a message of support to fellow SEC member Georgia ahead of their CFP quarterfinal game against Notre Dame.
Kiffin has previously expressed frustration with the CFP Selection Committee for keeping SEC programs like Alabama, South Carolina and Ole Miss out of the 12-team playoff.
Ole Miss started out the season with a No. 6 preseason rating. The Rebels slipped out of playoff contention after recording three SEC losses including an upset by Kentucky.
Other SEC teams that missed out on the playoff have not found much success in their bowl games. Alabama lost to Michigan in the ReliaQuest Bowl, while South Carolina suffered a defeat to Illinois in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl.
Those losses haven’t stopped Kiffin and other members of the SEC from rallying around the snubbed teams.
SEC commissioner Greg Sankey said on Thursday that he “would hope there is interest” in changing the playoff format ahead of the 2025 season, per The Athletic’s Seth Emerson.
Kiffin has meanwhile been supporting the conference by shouting out other teams competing for a national title.
Georgia will hope Kiffin’s endorsement comes with better luck than it did for Tennessee. The Volunteers responded to Kiffin’s encouragement with a first-round blowout loss to Ohio State.
Kiffin’s endorsement of Texas went better. The Longhorns went on to defeat Arizona State in double overtime at the Peach Bowl while clinching a spot in the national semifinal.
Georgia is looking to claim the fourth and final spot in the quarterfinal with a win over Notre Dame. That would put them on track to take on Penn State, a team that has also received a shoutout from Kiffin, in next Thursday’s Orange Bowl.
Ole Miss may not have a playoff game to prepare for, but Kiffin’s team will look to represent the SEC with a victory over Duke in their own Gator Bowl on Thursday night.
Lane Kiffin, the head coach of Ole Miss, surprised many college football fans by publicly showing his support for Georgia in the College Football Playoff. This comes just days before Ole Miss is set to play in a bowl game, raising eyebrows among both supporters and critics.
Kiffin took to social media to express his support for the Bulldogs, praising their impressive season and wishing them luck in the upcoming playoff games. Many fans were taken aback by Kiffin’s unexpected endorsement of a rival team, especially so close to his own team’s important bowl game.
While some saw Kiffin’s gesture as a show of sportsmanship and respect for a fellow SEC team, others questioned his loyalty to Ole Miss and wondered how his players would react to his public support for Georgia. Regardless of the reactions, Kiffin’s post has certainly stirred up some controversy in the college football community.
As Ole Miss prepares for their bowl game, all eyes will be on Kiffin and his team to see how they respond to this unusual situation. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
