Late Heroics Lift Hofstra Past LIU

Brookville, NY – Chase Liardi and Justin Hoyle won the final two bouts of the evening to give Hofstra a 19-16 win over LIU Monday night in an EIWA matchup at Pratt Recreation Center. The win was Hofstra’s second in a row and improved the Pride’s record to 7-5 overall and 4-1 in conference action.

Liardi scored a dominant 15-1 major decision over Sawyer Ostroff at 133 pounds to tie the score at 16. Hoyle secured the win as he rallied to defeat Devin Matthews at 141 pounds, 11-6. The Pride graduate student scored the final seven points to score the decision.

The Pride led 12-4 after No. 25 Ross McFarland’s 6-2 decision over Anthony D’Alesio in a tiebreaker at 184 pounds. The Sharks (4-8, 1-4) would rally to go up by one, 13-12, with a win by fall at 197 and then a decision at 285, and then went ahead by four, 16-12, as Robert Sagaris scored a 1-0 win over Dylan Acevedo

That set the stage for Hofstra’s late heroics as Liardi jumped out to a 10-0 lead after two periods and only surrendered a point following a second stall warning. Hoyle was down 4-1 in the second period before he tied the score with a takedown and then went up after three back points. In the final seconds, Hoyle scored one last takedown as he avoided a takedown attempt from Matthews.

The Pride returns to action Sunday afternoon when they host Drexel at 4 p.m. in the Mack Physical Education Center. The match is Hofstra’s Senior Day.
