Like Water for Chocolate Renewed for Second and Final Season at HBO

The fire and passion in Like Water for Chocolate isn’t over just yet: Max has renewed the Spanish-language romance for Season 2, which will be its last.

Salma Hayek Pinault, who executive-produces the show, announced the renewal Thursday at an HBO and Max showcase in London. She added that the series wouldn’t go beyond Season 2 because “We don’t want to do more than two. We want this to be very special,” our sister site Deadline reports.

Like Water for Chocolate was originally a 1992 movie based on the Mexican novel by Laura Esquivel. The series follows the star-crossed and whirlwind romance between Tita and Pedro. While clearly in love, Tita’s family turmoil thwarts their relationship leading Tita to navigate the many flavors and magic of cooking as she fights for love.

“This second season of the series will complete the story, fusing essential aspects of Mexican culture, such as magical realism and gastronomy, acting as forms of expression and connection,” said Mariano Cesar, SVP of General Entertainment Content and Programming Strategy at Warner Bros. Discovery for Latin America and US Hispanic, in a statement. “These themes are developed from a female perspective, in which the questioning of social and family mandates reinforces the current relevance of the narrative.

Azul Guaita (Rebelde) and Andres Paida (Mi Amor Sin Tiempo) are confirmed to return in their leading roles. Irene Azuela (Mamá Elena), Ana Valeria Becerril (Rosaura), Andrea Chaparro (Gertrudis), Ángeles Cruz (Nacha), and Mauricio García Lozano (Don Pedro Múzquiz) will also return.

Like Water for Chocolate‘s six-episode first season premiered in November.
