Jake Bates is a kicker for the Detroit Lions. He was undrafted out of the University of Arkansas in 2023 but signed with the Houston Texans, before getting released after the preseason. In early 2024, he signed with the Michigan Panthers of the United Football League and was selected to the All-UFL team before signing with the Lions in June.
In Week 7 of the 2024 season, Bates was named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week after kicking the game-winning 44-yard field goal to help Detroit beat Minnesota. In Week 10, Bates kicked a 58-yard field goal against Houston to tie the game late, and then hit a 52-yard game-winning field goal to help the Lions win. For his efforts, Bates was named NFC Special Teams Player of the Month for November. Then on Dec. 5, Bates hit another game-winning field goal with no time left to help Detroit beat Green Bay, 34-31, in a key divisional game.
Today on the podcast, we talk to Jake Bates about his incredible journey from being a brick salesman to becoming a kicker for the Detroit Lions. He discusses the challenges he faced after being released by the Texans, the importance of prayer in his life, and how he aims to glorify God through his actions, both on and off the field.

Meet Lions kicker, Jake Elliott, whose journey to the NFL has been nothing short of incredible. From being undrafted out of college to now starting for one of the most storied franchises in the league, Elliott’s story is one of perseverance and determination.
Elliott’s journey began at the University of Memphis, where he was a standout kicker for the Tigers. Despite his successful college career, Elliott went undrafted in the 2017 NFL Draft. However, that didn’t deter him from pursuing his dream of playing in the NFL.
After going undrafted, Elliott signed with the Cincinnati Bengals as an undrafted free agent. He was eventually released by the Bengals, but he didn’t give up. Elliott continued to work hard and hone his craft, eventually catching the eye of the Detroit Lions, who signed him to their practice squad.
Fast forward to today, and Elliott is now the starting kicker for the Lions, showcasing his strong leg and accuracy on the field. His journey serves as an inspiration to all aspiring athletes, proving that hard work and determination can lead to success, no matter the obstacles in your way.
