Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2025: Here’s what’s open, closed in NYC on Monday
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — On Monday, Jan. 20, we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
The federal holiday, celebrated annually on the third Monday of January, honors the birthday of King, the slain civil rights activist, who would have turned 96 in 2025.

Staten Island Ferry: Weekend schedule
Staten Island Railway: Regular weekday schedule
Buses: Buses will run on a modified weekday schedule, with special schedules for some express bus routes. Visit MTA.info, MTA app, or TrainTime app for Real-Time Updates.
Staten Island Advance: Advance offices are closed, but the newspaper will publish.
Banks: Most closed.
Financial Markets: Closed
Government Offices: Federal, state and city offices are closed.
Courts: Closed
U.S. Post Offices: Closed
Sanitation: No garbage collection, no recycling, no organics collection and no street cleaning.
Residents who normally receive Monday trash, curbside composting, or recycling collection should place their material at the curb Monday evening for collection starting Tuesday, Jan. 21.
Please note that residents may experience collection delays as there may be a backlog of material.
Schools: Closed
City Parking: Alternate side parking rules are suspended. Parking meters are in effect.
State Department of Motor Vehicles: Closed
