LAS VEGAS — Andy Cruz returns to the ring Saturday for the fifth fight of his pro career, after lighting up the amateur ranks with three World Amateur Championship gold medals, and an Olympic crown from the 2020 Games in Tokyo.

The 4-0 fighter, the latest in a long line of Cubans who are difficult to compete against in the pro game, takes on 21-fight veteran Omar Salcido at the Chelsea Ballroom inside the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas near the top of a seven-bout card on DAZN.

He fights with great respect on his name as Premier Boxing Champions light heavyweight David Morrell couldn’t help but marvel at the abilities Cruz possesses, during an exclusive interview with World Boxing News recently.

“Andy Cruz is like my brother,” Morrell told us. “I love him. He’s a superstar, and one special guy. He’s different.”

Though the focus for Cruz right now is Salcido, there is ongoing backstory regarding a possible future fight against Keyshawn Davis.

Cruz defeated Davis four times as amateurs — including three wins that came in finals of championship events, meaning the Cuban beat Davis to the gold medal at the Pan-American Games, World Amateur Championships, and then the Olympics during an incredible 12-month hot streak.

A fifth fight between them, this time as pro, has long been mooted. But speaking to World Boxing News in November, last year, Davis quashed the talk of a fight by saying Cruz “is not ready,” and that it will only happen when Cruz and his team finally feel like he’s ready to face Keyshawn.

“I already reached out to his people to see if he wanted to fight me. His people said no, they’re not ready,” Davis told us three months ago. He said he’s since been uninterested in his career, and hasn’t watched a fight of his since his pro debut.

“Boxing-wise, Keyshawn Davis has no shot at beating Andy Cruz,” Morrell told us. “Andy is a superstar in the making and he will prevail once again” if he fights Davis as a pro.

Hearn expects Davis to fight Cruz. “There’ll be a part of Keyshawn who will really want it. Andy is just very difficult to beat, even though Keyshawn is a great fighter.

“I think that fight will become a really big one, one day.”
