How to stay safe on slick winter roads
There were 220,526 winter-related crashes in Michigan between 2015 and 2019, including 3,101 that involved serious injuries, according to Michigan State Police.
Here are a few tips to stay safe on winter roads:
-
It can take up to 10 times longer to stop your vehicle on snowy and/or icy roads. Slow down and allow more room between your vehicle and the one ahead of you. This gives you more time to react and brake, reducing your crash risk.
-
Put your turn signal on sooner than you would in warm weather months. Remember, it takes longer for the cars behind you to react and stop, too.
-
Avoid distractions now more than ever. Taking your eyes off the road for even a few seconds robs you of precious reaction time. Put your phone away and don’t try to multitask (eating, putting on makeup, etc.).
-
Watch for black ice. Black ice, a very thin and nearly invisible layer of ice that makes the road look wet, is another reason to slow down this winter. Stay alert for black ice on bridges, ramps and overpasses, and in shaded areas.
-
Avoid a ticket. Michigan laws require drivers to move at a speed that is “reasonable and proper” for the road conditions. Even if you are driving at or below the speed limit, you could get a speeding ticket if the road conditions make that speed unreasonable for safe driving.

With the arrival of the new year just around the corner, Michigan residents are bracing themselves for a wintry mix of slush, snow, and cold temperatures on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.
According to weather forecasts, a low-pressure system is expected to move through the region, bringing with it a mix of rain and snow that could potentially create hazardous road conditions. The precipitation is expected to transition to all snow as temperatures drop, leading to the possibility of accumulation in some areas.
In addition to the wintry mix, frigid temperatures are also expected to settle in, with highs struggling to reach above freezing and lows dropping into the single digits. Wind chills could make it feel even colder, prompting residents to bundle up and take precautions to stay warm.
As Michiganders prepare to ring in the new year, it’s important to stay informed about the latest weather updates and to exercise caution while traveling. Whether you’re celebrating at home or venturing out to a New Year’s Eve event, be sure to dress warmly, drive safely, and have a plan in place to stay safe and comfortable in the winter weather.
