N.J. weather: Up to 6 inches of snow in forecast for weekend winter storm

A winter storm expected to hit New Jersey on Sunday could dump up 4 to 6 inches of snow across nearly half the state ahead of dangerously cold temperatures next week.

“The greatest potential for significant accumulations remains for areas along the I-95 corridor and points north and west,” the National Weather Service said in its Friday morning forecast discussion.

Forecasters say the track and strength of the storm could still shift with conflicting predictions from weather models.

“Forecast guidance still varies significantly, considering it`s only 48-60 hours away,” the weather service said.

For counties south and east of the I-95 corridor, 2 to 4 inches of snow is expected. Snow total forecasts drop to 1 to 2 inches closer to the Jersey Shore and Delaware Bay.

Snow could start falling as early as Sunday morning and continue through the evening with rates as high as 1 inch per hour, the weather service said.

AccuWeather.com’s snow total forecast aligns closely with the National Weather Service’s map. The private weather forecasting company is also predicting 3 to 6 inches north and west of I-95.

Snow-covered and slippery roads are likely, AccuWeather.com said.

After the storm clears out Sunday, the immediate concern will be dangerously cold temperatures next week.

Highs on Monday will make it into the 20s followed by highs in the teens on Tuesday and Wednesday. Overnight lows will be in the single digits with wind chill values below zero.

Normal temps this time of year range from the mid 20s to upper 30s.

It will be mostly dry during that period, though forecasters say there’s a chance of light snow on Tuesday night.

Temperatures will bounce back a bit on Thursday, but we’re still likely to remain below freezing with highs in the mid-to-upper 20s.

Heading into the weekend, Friday will be tranquil with sunny skies and highs in the upper 30s and low 40s.

Temperatures fall into the 20s overnight. Expect a chance of rain on Saturday with cloudy skies and highs in the 40s.
