New Raiders coach Pete Carroll: Goal to ‘win immediately’
The Las Vegas Raiders introduced new coach Pete Carroll and general manager John Spytek on Monday. Here are some highlights from the presser:
- Carroll said the goal is to win “immediately,” He doesn’t want a long rebuild.
- Carroll said the key he wants from his players is for them to be great teammates to each other. he said that’s how great team are built.
- Carroll is just getting his staff together. He said he wants to bring some coaches he has history with, yet also bring in new coaches and keep some of the former staff on board.
- Carroll said it’s all about competition. “I’m always competing,” Carroll said. “If you don’t want to compete, you’re in the wrong place.”
- Carroll said he and Spytek will make every decision together. He said the ownership group will be part of big decisions as well. So, yes, Tom Brady, who was not at the press conference, will be a big art of everything as expected. So, it appears, not one person will have final say on personnel decisions. “We’re going to lean on (Brady) like crazy,” Carroll said.
- Carroll said Brady will be part of the team’s plan at quarterback.
- Spytek said he looking for Brady type at quarterback in terms of leadership.
- Carroll said the Raiders “captured” as a youth while growing up in the Bay Area.
- Carroll said Raiders’ owner Mark Davis “made a great move” by making Brady a big part of what the Raiders are doing.
- Raiders’ star pass-rusher Maxx Crosby was at the facility for the event. It’s going to be a big offseason for Crosby as he is looking for new guaranteed money in his contract. So, he’s getting a jump on getting to know his new bosses. Spytek shouted him out during his opening remarks.
- Among the many people Spytek thanked was Matt Russell and John Elway “from the dreaded Denver Broncos.” Spytek was a scout there.
- Spytek said his wife, Kristen, will be a “pillar’ of the Las Vegas community.
- There was a fun moment was Spytek mentioned his high school coach who is still coaching at 75 years. Carroll said “why are looking at me.”
- Spytek said some teams mean just a little more and he thinking the Raiders are one of those iconic franchises.
- Marshawn Lynch was in attendance to see his Seattle Seahawks coach start his new journey. That was man with “Raaaaiiiiidddddeerrrsssss” chant.
- Carroll said he wants to fill up Allegiant Stadium with Raiders fans. He clearly knows that has been a program.
- Carroll downplayed the fact that he will make history as the oldest head coach in NFL history as he turns 74 in September. Message to older folks: “frigging battle every day.”
