NEW YORK — Nebraska will play Saturday without starting wide receiver Isaiah Neyor, who opted to focus on preparing for his professional aspirations during December.

Neyor’s opt-out, however, will create more opportunities for wide receivers on the depth chart and maybe even a new wide receiver or two in the bowl game.

Speaking Friday ahead of the Pinstripe Bowl, Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule said a number of wide receivers will take on more of Neyor’s workload, beginning with wide receiver Jaylen Lloyd, who was listed as the starting wide receiver in place of Neyor on Nebraska’s bowl depth chart.

“Jaylen Lloyd, obviously, he’s a very, very talented player and this is giving him some more opportunities,” Rhule said. “It’s obviously given Jacory (Barney Jr.) some more opportunities. Jahmal Banks has been the starter for us all year, but it gives some more opportunities for him, and then some of the young guys — Keelan Smith was really developing and coming on strong. I think it’s been good for all those guys to have some more opportunities. Isaiah Garcia-Castaneda has done a nice job, Alex Bullock.

Neyor led the way for Nebraska with five touchdown catches, and had 34 catches for 455 yards. Lloyd played in every regular season game this year, making one start. He has caught 12 passes for 248 yards on the year and added three carries.

Smith has appeared in one game this season — the season opener against UTEP — where he had one catch for four yards and played 18 snaps in the opening win. Smith, the son of former NFL star and Husker defensive lineman Neil Smith, caught 74 passes for 1,268 yards and 17 touchdowns as a high school senior before enrolling at Nebraska.

“I think Jaylen probably is a young player, and Keelan, they’ve gotten some more opportunities,” Rhule said.

The absence of star wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson, who transferred to Kentucky, has left a void in the Nebraska Cornhuskers’ receiving corps. However, this setback has opened up opportunities for other players to step up and make a name for themselves, including Zavier Betts, Alante Brown, and Omar Manning.

One player who is poised to take advantage of this opportunity is Samori Toure, a transfer from Montana who has already made a strong impression in spring practices. Another player who could see an increased role is Will Nixon, who has shown flashes of potential in limited playing time.

While it’s always tough to see a talented player like Wan’Dale Robinson leave, it’s also exciting to see what the future holds for the young wide receivers on the Huskers’ roster. With the right guidance and coaching, these players have the potential to make a significant impact on the team and help fill the void left by Robinson’s departure.
