Nick Nurse explains how Sixers can slow down Lakers star Anthony Davis
CAMDEN, N.J. — The Philadelphia 76ers will certainly have their hands full when they play host to the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday. Without both Joel Embiid and Andre Drummond, the Sixers will not have much size to match up with Anthony Davis.
Davis is having yet another monster season averaging 26.3 points and 12.1 rebounds, but is coming off two consecutive huge games for LA. He had 36 points and 13 rebounds on Saturday against the Golden State Warriors and 40 and 20 rebounds against the Charlotte Hornets on Monday.
Without Embiid and Drummond, coach Nick Nurse and the Sixers will have to figure out a way to slow him down.
“Obviously, he’s super skilled and super big, right?” Nurse said at practice on Monday. “So we got to try to devise something to take away some of the high percentage stuff. I thought in LA, he really just played a lot bigger than us. He was just at the front of the rim, mostly offensive rebounding, some late rolling post up plays where we just didn’t have time to send enough bodies, because he was catching it, getting the ball too deep on the rebounds, getting it too deep on some of the actions.”
Nurse is referring to Philadelphia’s loss to the Lakers back on Nov. 8 on the road. Davis had 31 points, nine rebounds, and four blocks as he took advantage of no Embiid in that contest as well. On Tuesday, the Sixers will need Guerschon Yabusele to hold his own and will send waves of defenders to help him.
“We got to try to figure that out, or at least try to push him out to make making shots rather than layup after layup after layup, but that’s certainly a challenge, right?” Nurse finished. “Just because of the size and all that stuff.”
The Sixers will look to get the job done on Tuesday and win their third straight game to begin a 6-game homestand.
In a recent interview, Toronto Raptors head coach Nick Nurse shared his insights on how the Philadelphia 76ers can slow down Los Angeles Lakers star Anthony Davis. Nurse, known for his defensive strategies, highlighted the importance of a collective effort from the Sixers’ defense to contain Davis.
According to Nurse, the key to limiting Davis’s impact on the game is to disrupt his rhythm and force him into tough shots. This could be achieved through double-teaming, rotating defenders, and closing out on his jump shots. Nurse emphasized the need for active communication and coordination on defense to prevent Davis from getting into a groove.
Additionally, Nurse suggested that the Sixers should focus on limiting Davis’s opportunities in transition and crashing the boards to prevent him from scoring easy baskets. By controlling the pace of the game and denying Davis easy looks, the Sixers can make it harder for him to get going offensively.
Overall, Nurse’s advice for the Sixers is to stay disciplined, communicate effectively, and execute their defensive game plan with precision to slow down Anthony Davis and give themselves the best chance of success against the Lakers.
